It will take several years to gain any serous understanding of a field and without a phd in that field you have no idea how to go about research.

Separating science and engineering is pretty pointless.

Engineers use science to do whatever they do. They aren't using magic or happy thoughts.

And research in science takes some engineering at one point or another. You eventually have to use or build some kind of apparatus to aid in whatever you are researching. You can't just shit some math and theories into a notebook and expect anyone to take you seriously if you haven't done anything to prove the shit in your notebook.
