Hey /sci/, can you explain to me why every time I say I want to be an aerospace engineeri I get a "hurr-durr but dey shut down space lololol" response?

pic related, its my face every time.

>> No.4098128

Because dey shut down space.

>> No.4098140

What exactly is an aerospace engineer? I know an engineer is responsible for driving the train but is it just preparing for when we get trains that can travel in space?

>> No.4098143

Isn't it obvious? Because dey shut down space lololol.

Try talking to people that know what the fuck an aerospace engineer dose for a living, rather then people that think it's being Scotty on the USS Wienermobile.

>> No.4098165

Why OP. Because most people that go to college expect for their degree to be a 'money maker' for them. There is not much money in aerospace engineering these days. But, you shouldn't be going to school for money, but rather, what interests you. So do it if thats what you want.

>> No.4098170

well then thank you for the comfort guys.

Just bend the truth and call it "aeronautical" engineering. It'll give laymen a better idea of what you're actually probably going to be doing.

There's not much money anywhere, and well this is what I've been going for since I was 7 and visited Kennedy space center. I just kind of figured that by the time I get a masters, space tourism would be starting up, but well it is kind of a gamble.

Unless they know what those terms mean. Then you are just being disengenuious.

Anyway, civilian employment of aerospace professionals is really rising. The demand for space based equipment is hardly going to go down in the future.

>> No.4098194

Fuck space tourism. The money is and will be for the foreseeable future in communications and sensors in space.

aero engineer student here

I don't get that response often, but people seem to think I should be offended that NASA funding is getting cut. I think the privatization of the industry will be beneficial in the long run.

But this is coming from a junior who has yet to land a position, so...

Yes, satellites. Integrating the systems and making them durable enough to survive the huge acoustic and G forces of an orbital launch is hard work, as assembling them.

Unlike other work in space, sats pay for themselves many times over and have a real, current demand to be filled.

It's from /s/. Sorry.
