So why can't scientists synthesize every element known?
How hard could it be to just rearrange the nucleons and electrons?

Why don't you try it?

That's the silliest thing I've read today

Why every element, when carbon is all we need?

>> No.4089977

We actually can. What's your point?

We can you fucking retard.

It's not profitable though.

Really? Ok then, thanks.

We can do it either trough fusion or fission right?

Yes, it's how all those super heavy element that only last for fractions of a second before decaying were created to.

Am I the only person that finds Tyson respectable, but far from genius? He has an incredible personality, but I can't help but feel he appeals to shitty analogies when explaining physics (like most contemporary public physicists) and robs the science of it's true mystic quality?
Maybe I'm spoiled by Feynman. He always seemed to want to engage the audience in what were truly fundamental mysteries of nature as physicists perceive them. Never faking it, telling you it's like something when it really isn't at all.

I feel the exact same way.

As I understand it, if we add or remove protons, we can move an element along the periodic table in either direction. This is literally fucking alchemy, and this could be our ticket to a postscarcity society. If it's not profitable, and that's why we don't do it, then that's it, I'm off to go join some anti-money collective.
