You know, that's an interesting thought. I've never cut my eyebrows, yet they're at the perfect length all the time.

How does the body know how long the hair strand is once it's out of the body?

Obviously it has to know when to grow it, otherwise your eyebrows would never grow back out if you shaved/plucked them.

I guess this applies to arm hair/other body hair.

Probably not, you just don't give a fuck. Anyway, they fall out frequently, like eyelashes.

Hair grows for some time, and will fall out after some time and will need to be replaced by new hair. This has to repeat over and over. So, when you have long hair (aka, old hair) it'll feel like your hair is growing slower because it takes time for new hair to catch up in length, and then the new hair will fall out after it's too old as well.

I imagine that the follicles can only support hairs of a certain demand (nutrient, weight, size, dunno really) and any outside that point fall out or else are unable to grow anymore.

Just an illusion. Hair growth happens in the follicle, not in the shaft, so the length of the shaft is pretty irrelevant.

All things being equal, they grow at the same rate for everyone, whether they shave them off or not. The only difference between your scalp hair and your eyebrow hair is that the follicles of the latter, after periods of growth, have *much* longer resting phases during which individual hair shafts fall out and new ones regrow.

If a hair reaches a certain age, it'll fall off.
Now, since the growth of a single hair is perfectly linear (cannot depend on the length of the hair), generally, a hair above a certain length will fall out. If you cut the hair, of course, this is no longer valid. It will therefore grow at the rate in which a single hair grows (i think 2 mm / day for hair on the head, 1 mm for others).
