Could someone help me shed some light on semiconductors?

Why are semiconductors used in industry so much?
Why was their discovery regarded as one of the best things to happen in the last century?
Why are they used over normal conductors, what makes them so special?

why the fuck do you choose that pic? i fucking hate the sight of it, and everyone who bumps this thread will be shoving that stupid fucking frog, right in my fucking face on the front page every fucking time!

Challenge accepted!

And semiconductors are required to make transistors, which are required to make processors, so obviously as almost everything with electronics in it has processors nowadays (or at least transistors), semiconductors are used a lot.

Well, OP, silicon is useful to electronics because it can be "doped" (small amount of certain impurities added) to be more amenable to giving up electrons or taking in electrons. You can stack layers of differently doped silicon to create a transistor, harnessing this new property of the materials. This is a poor man's explanation; I'm not much of a physics person.
If you're interested in transistors, look them up.

>>Why are semiconductors used in industry so much?
They're trillions of times better than vacuum tubes.

>>Why was their discovery regarded as one of the best things to happen in the last century?
They're the fundamental component of all computers and other electronic devices.

>>Why are they used over normal conductors, what makes them so special?
Normal conductors can't do what they do. Basically a semiconductor is like a switch that is closed between two wires when there is electricity flowing through another wire. From that we can amplify signals or construct circuits which execute combinatorial logic.

Reverse psychology won't work: whenever I feel like someone wants me to do something, if I don't mind doing it anyway, I flip a coin. On head, I do it, on tail, I do the opposite. Almost surely I'll do something that annoys him/her if given an infinite amount of trials.

erm, nope. very rarely.

that just means you annoy everyone 50% of the time, no matter whether they use reverse psycology or not.

>>3992640
i never change it, it auto-writes into the box, so i dont even have to type in my tripcode (which is nice, seeing as its a random hash of letters, numbers, and punctuation, and would significantly slow down my posting speed if i kept having to write it)

Exactly. Awesome, isn't it?
