found this on my window shade today; i live in the northeast US

i have never seen this kind of insect before; any idea what it is? it is as wide as a quarter; released it back to the outside after i took snapshots

thank you for your responses -- im looking up the subspecies on google

i guess i was intrigued by this particular organism because of its wings -- notice how this fly can fold the wings into a beam -- when it flew around inside the container, it seemed like it could unfold the wing like a chinese fan, something i've never seen a fly do before... let you know when i come up with the exact hit
