How does /sci/ feel about Brian Cox?

He's going to be the next Carl Sagan but /sci/ fags hate him because he's more attractive then them.

As a presenter he's mediocre. Anyone could be interesting if they took a film crew to the grand canyon just to drop some rocks in the sand while explaining orbiting and gravity.

A real educator wouldn't need to resort to constant use of irrelevent, jaw-dropping scenery just to hold the audience's interest.

>implying if someone tries to wow the audience, it immediately means they're shit.
why can't someone do both? be a good educator presenting material in an intriguing and interesting way, while also using the wow factor to hold the attention of those who would otherwise not care, regardless of how good an educator teaches.

>> No.3975793

He will never reach Bronowski, he's too interested in fame.

>> No.3975815

he's pretty much single handedly improved public interest in science particularly astronomy. it really doesn't matter what i think of him, or what anyone here thinks. outreach is outreach, not all of it suits everybody but that doesn't mean people should stop.

he's doing good work, on a personal note he's a cheap asshole but that has nothing to do with his programs and shouldn't affect it.

>> No.3975823

>>3975788
But there's nothing clever about the wow factor he uses. A gifted presenter or educator would think of a way to make the material interesting using a novel demo.

Any dunce could be interesting if they had unlimited travel resources throw n at them so they spent each new scene on a different continent to stage their mundane depictions of physical laws with rocks and drawings in the sand.

I'm saying his personal educating and presenting ability is overrated. He hasn't demonstrated any more skill than average. I'm not saying the show itself is shit because obviously it manages to make physics interesting to the layman.

>> No.3975828

He perpetually talks through a smiley grimace which is kind of annoying but if he gets people into science then he's all right.

this contradicts everything else you said.

I love his shows. The end of wonders of the solar system nearly made me cry.

i don't know if you can watch it, but it is worth a try ( not too long )

Not that guy, but you're completely wrong. Or you don't understand what the word "contradict" means. He just said that Cox isn't a particularly gifted presenter, but that the insane budget that his program has allows him, and would allow pretty much anyone in his place, to make the subject interesting.

At no point does that suggest that the show isn't successful at its mission, just that it isn't due to the person on screen.

And you obviously haven't been paying attention to his documentaries if you think their only good point is their budget and travel opportunities.

He works in the same building as I study in.
I had a wee next to him the other day.
Much taller in real life.

Did you ever think he uses these environments to make parallels between them and the enormity and beauty of space? I think it works very well.

Also in the first episode of the series there are some shots at huge waterfalls in the Amazon because its completely relevant to the theme of that episode, namely the Sun. They're not just added in for novelty.

I've read (on /sci/) that he never turns up for his lectures. Dont know how true that is though

>> No.3976098

>>3975775

Fuck off, you just admitted that he's interesting.

PROTIP: It's not the scenery backdrop, it's him and how he words things.

I remember one guy a spoonful of a neutron star would have the mass of mount everest, that was a cool perspective to use but Brian Cox did his one which just sounded way better and made it crazier to think about for me. It was something like: "If you fell from 2 meters above a neutron stars surface you would be traveling 30,000 km before you hit the ground"

He's fucking smart, fucking awesome and will be the next sagan. Feel with it.

I wasn't making any claims about the quality of his documentaries. I've never watched them. I don't really like watching science documentaries anymore. I just said that your comment about his final statement contradicting his arguments was false. If you like his documentaries, whatever, I don't care, but you shouldn't have to try to attack it by attacking people's opinions in nonsensical ways when a simple "I disagree" would suffice and be accurate. Don't get so butthurt about people not liking the things you do.
