So this show's only funny in the "hipster nerd" kind of sense rather than anything actually nerdy?

That show started off science-funny and then quickly evolved into comic-book-nerd-funny. It's OK, but it's not my thing.

Network TV is aimed at people with IQs in the low 90's. You're not going to find a show on ABC/NBC/CBS/Fox/any other american TV channel, really with math and physics jokes (unless the point is to laugh at the nerd making the stupid math joke).

Americans take pride in their ignorance and stupidity.

Yeah, I know, and that sucks.
You can't nit-pick everything to death either, though. I can tear through most nature documentaries for either over-simplifying or being flat out wrong, but I still let myself enjoy them. There's always going to be parts of your judgment you'll have to suspend (unless it's the American version of 'Life', which is an unforgivable atrocity).

>>3954426
also has a point that the show has to appeal to a larger demographic to be viable, so they have to keep it entertaining for those outside of the science-literate niche market (a sad but true statement).

Troof.

In the beginning, House used to be about actual medicine and deduction and crap, but it's devolved into just relationshit and office politics drama with a little medical stuff tacked on for show.

In the beginning, Numb3rs had a little actual math in it, but after not very long it turned into another generic cop show with a math superhero pulling gibberish out of his ass to magically solve crimes with fake "math".

Also, that Alium dude on the "History" channel.

It only references obscure scientific principles so it can appeal to a wider audience. It wouldn't be so bad, but they don't even really reference them correctly...

The show is really about Leonard and Penny. There is no depth to any of the rest of the cast.

Sheldon also just pisses me off now. So sad to see a perfectly good show go to waste...

I disagree about House. I will admit the last season sucked and focused too much on relationships but I feel like other than that the other seasons had a respectable\balanced amount. You have to admit that the way the episodes were set up got old too...

Breaking Bad started out as a drama involving the use/making of meth.

Breaking Bad is now an even better drama involving the use/making of meth.

They're also only doing 1 final season (total of 5) to preserve the shows place in TVs hall of fame.

This show is for...well, pic related. The girls (and guys, to a lesser extent) who realized it's cool to be nerdy, geeky, etc. But they half-ass it. They think having owned a GBC and "Super Mario Bros. Deluxe" at one time makes them gamers. They know Vader is Luke's poppa, but they don't really know Han shot first. And they're called a nerd by their friends for getting an A in math class, so it validates their delusions.

In short, it mainstreams geek culture and dumbs it down for everyone who thinks they "get it," but they never do. case in point - a female friend who's common sense could be contained under your fingernail, asked me once who Leonard Nimoy was "because he was on The Big Bang Theory." If you don't know that to begin with, why are you watching the show?

Also, laughtracks only work on Seinfeld and The IT Crowd.

Pretty much this.

Am I seriously the only person who has ever actually watched this show? The VAST MAJORITY of the humour has NOTHING AT ALL to do with science/comic book/general nerd stuff. Most of it is just about weird/socially awkward the characters are. They might make a half dozen nerdy jokes/references in an episode – but the rest is “lol Sheldon is so weird”, “lol Raj can’t talk to girls and acts gay”, “lol Penny is a bit of a slut”, “lol Howard pathetically hits on girls”, etc.

Seriously. Why does everyone constantly try to argue that the show is based on science/nerd humour? That’s the gimmick, but it’s clearly not where the majority of the humour and content comes from.

Don't knock House.

>>3954481
I think the medical soap House watched in the earlier seasons was a acknowledgement from the writers that the show was just that, a tv show.

>> No.3954679

>>3954443

Basically, if they try to sound nerdy and smart but just talk nonsense and the viewers find it funny, the viewers are not nerdy and smart and etc.

It's just another theme, they mix some buzz words in a script and they conjure up another episode. Write a GUI in Visual Basic to track down the criminal's IP address sounded pretty smart to the people who had no idea what it meant.

And that's why it's a bad show.

>> No.3954682

But House is actually good. And it's not because I don't understand jackshit of the medical stuff, I am well aware they're probably spewing bullshit most of the time.

Well, the mathematician who started a famous blog about Numb3rs giving more details about the math used in the show etc. wound up giving up halfway through the series because he felt the math was just a pasted-on gimmick.

OTOH the doctor who writes a famous blog giving reviews of the medicine in House is still going, if only to point out just how often they're talking out their ass.

House blog @ http://www.politedissent.com/house_pd.html .

Can't remember where the Numb3rs blog was, but it was still there last time I checked (probably 6 months ago)

yeah, i always make sure to watch a whole episode of something before i decide i hate it. and whole songs, too.

actually, i like to really sit down and get to know a person, you know, take them out a few times, before i decide to hate them.

i really don't like people who form strong opinions on anything, it really rustles my jimmies, in fact, it's SO annoying that I like to post on an imageboard to make sure people know how much i hate people who make instinctive judgements. i really think it makes me look like a cooler person.

It's for hipsters with average IQ and people who think they're nerdy but are actually near mentally disabled. The whole show is based on making "jokes" so the the viewer is like, "oh, I get that joke cause I play video games too!!! I'm so nerdy and being nerdy means I'm smart!"
