Give science its due, but don't tell me technology made the world a better place. It didn't. Putting a cellphone and an iPad in the hands of every idiot in North America didn't help any situation. Putting a car under his ass, putting him in a chair with 3 degrees of rotation and a PC in front of him did not help humanity one iota. Neither did Hawking's theories help in any way shape or form our situation. So if dumb-asses on facebook want to slam Hawking and theoretical physics, I say fine, and so be it. Why should they care? Whose assumption was it that the masses could be enlightened out of their ignorance and this would necessarily cause an improvement in the human condition?

The fact is that people don't "deserve" the fruits of science, and yet, here we are, falling over ourselves to get the degree, to go be a slave at worst, or a technocrat in on a dying planet, at best, to deliver unnecessary technology into the hands of people who will simply use it to cause further degradation and destruction.

The psychological fallacy is simply that virtue follows from progress, and that was never true. Human advancement led to systemic failure. Most if not all of you /sci/ nerds are going to find life as a corporate peon denigrating and unfulfilling.

Its not the fault of facts or science or technology, its that this global economy is a shit sandwich for everybody. We are heading into a new age of non-enlightenment, a dark age. Boom Wasted.

Hospitals I have no problem with. Cars, on the other hand, were a terrible human invention. We've invested most of our material wealth in "mobility", built our economies and cities around them. I kept thinking of this when I was at the national ACS conference. You had small groups making marginal progress just identifying solutions to toxicity from toxic molecules- these were few in number. Large in number was the Gee-Whiz inventors of novel molecules and industrial synthesis. You see the problem: we have great capability in making huge messes which threaten everyone's health and almost no capability to clean them up. Case in point: PBDEs. Profit-oriented Science, came up with this toxic molecule, and delivered the science to industry, which manufactured billions of gallons, and hooked into our disgusting corporate government which mandated its addition to just about every type of foam polymer in existence because it was a "flame retardant". Now it pollutes every corner of the Earth.

obesity epidemic was not due to automobiles for the most part actually. it was due to changing to a high carb and sugar processed diet with less manual labor.

public transportation is good in some cities- portland, pittsburg, and a few others. it tends to be dangerous and impractical in the more vibrant cities in america though. i agree it would have been nice to avoid the suburban sprawl caused by people trying to avoid 'bad' neighborhoods and schools though.
