Government people are put in office to handle very complex issues, while the people who put them in office are ignorant, retarded, and obsessed over stupid crap. Therefore getting elected has nothing to do with competence, and everything to do with who can rile up the fear and passion in whichever segment of the barely-literate population they've chosen to focus on.
