3896643 No.3896643 [Reply] [Original]

An atheist professor was teaching a college class and he told the class that he was going to prove that there is no God. He said, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you 15 minutes!" Ten minutes went by. He kept taunting God, saying, "Here I am, God. I'm still waiting."
He got down to the last couple of minutes and a Marine just returned from Afghanistan and released from active duty and newly registered in the class walked up to the professor, hit him full force in the face, and sent him flying from his platform. The professor struggled up, obviously shaken and yelled, "What's the matter with you? Why did you do that?"
The Marine replied, "God was real busy watching over the ones protecting your freedom so he sent me."

the real end of the story isn't a Marine punching the professor

it's the elapse of the 15 minutes in uncomfortable silence, and the professor claiming proof that God did not exist.

the rebuttal is that the professor cannot count on exhausting an eternal God, one of whose properties is long-suffering, in fifteen minutes.

That's okay.
Okay, now we look at christianity, okay so they say a god did it right? Well, okay let's pretend that's as relatively lacking in complexity as the atheist reason.

Now... after the world has started, invisible skydaddy is talking to people? Throwing shit about, contradicting himself in his books etc?
There's no ifs ands or buts about it, this shit takes infinitely more faith to believe in since you have to actually play logic games to make it hold water with even yourself.

Believing a/many gods created the world, that's not so bad, probably wrong but not worth hassling about. Believing a specific god with specific attributes now that takes a major leap of faith, then to pile on logical paradoxes, rituals and massive retardation like it was going out of style? That takes faith and insanity.

those three examples have two distinct histories, and two distinct properties: before Jesus, and after Jesus

if you read what those three had (and as mythological characters at that) prior to Christ, you would see that, after Christ, the stories changed. these false gods, fictional characters all, had their "histories" changed to glom onto Jesus' coattails

if you didn't know this, look into it; look into what the fictional stories about horus were prior to Jesus, and what they changed to after Jesus ACTUALLY did all those things

He got down to the last couple of minutes and a Marine just returned from Afghanistan and released from active duty and newly registered in the class walked up to the professor, tried to hit him full force in the face, but the professor skillfully dodged the attack.
The marine struggled up after losing his balance, but he professor kept him down with one foot. A condescending smile appeared on the professor's face when he asked, "What's the matter with you? Why did you do that?" The Marine replied, "God was real busy watching over the ones protecting your freedom so he sent me." With a smirk on his face, the professor said, "If God was real, why would he send who would fail in their mission?"

He's advocating for a belief only in those things which it is possible to prove.

I don't believe in dragons. I can never prove that dragons do not exist to someone hell bent on defending them. If I want to see their dragon, they say it's invisible. If I say I'll listen, it's inaudible. If I say I'll throw sand at it to outline it, it's permeable to sand and so on. They'll always have an excuse ready, nothing I do can eliminate all 'doubt'.

The trick is, they don't really believe there is a dragon any more than I do. That's why they always have an excuse ready, they KNOW that all the experimental results are going to turn out as if there is no dragon at all. They know what will happen, and they have an excuse ready.

They don't believe in dragons, they believe that believing in dragons is good, that it's something they should do. They have belief in belief.

Their actual belief isn't "I believe in dragons" it's "I think it is good to believe in dragons."

"The word dragon entered the English language in the early 13th century from Old French dragon, which in turn comes from Latin draconem (nominative draco) meaning "huge serpent, dragon," from the Greek word δράκων, drakon (genitive drakontos, δράκοντος) "serpent, giant seafish", which is believed to have come from an earlier stem drak-, a stem of derkesthai, "to see clearly," from Proto-Indo-European derk- "to see" or "the one with the (deadly) glance." The Greek and Latin term referred to any great serpent, not necessarily mythological, and this usage was also current in English up to the 18th century."

It actually comes from the same etymology as sea serpents. Regardless, you're arguing semantics, since it's obvious what I meant by dragon.

Matthew 17:20 NIV He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

So, unless you can make mountains move by thinking hard at them you have no real faith.

Right out of the mouth of the bearded dude himself. Gotta love that literal interpretation.

Also, to those suggesting that we should just listen to traditional views of religion and never think of anything new:

"Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth;shall ye not know it?
I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."

Utterly false. After all, YOU FUCKERS are the ones who keep insisting that this god-thing is omnipresent and keeps acting on Humanity. Well, anything that's omnipresent and is a local actor, should be leaving behind SOME evidence. After millennia of looking, the grand total of discovered evidence is ZERO.

It's clear then that the proposed god-thing simply doesn't exist. Or it's totally noninteractive. But if it's totally noninteractive ... then how the FUCK did any of your goddies and religious freakazoids detect it? ANSWER: YOU FUCKING DIDN'T. It's all in your mind and you need professional psychological assistance (with a SHITLOAD of pharmaceuticals) in order to correct that particular mental illness of yours.

Once again: Your god-thing as proposed is a huge producer of evidence, by (your) definition of it. And yet we have ZERO evidence of that, everywhere, anytime. So you're just fucking WRONG. Your god-thing just doesn't fucking exist.

Keep telling me by implication that you've detected the undetectable. GOD DAMN ARE YOU PEOPLE FUCKING STUPID SIMIANS. You're not even Human.

uh, it's easy to disprove the teapot; look at the wike for shit's sake:

Russell's teapot, sometimes called the celestial teapot, cosmic teapot or Bertrand's teapot, is an analogy first coined by the philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872–1970) to illustrate the idea that the philosophic burden of proof lies upon a person making scientifically unfalsifiable claims rather than shifting the burden of proof to others, specifically in the case of religion.

it is a "claim" "coined" by Russell

therefore, it was never presented to me as something that realz; if it doesn't even present itself to me as something that realz, there's really no valid reason for me wasting my time disproving that it's real. it has already admitted it is not real.

Yes, because we were progressing too fast for God, and he was scared of us. It wasn't the tower itself, it was our undeniable thirst for knowledge. "The LORD said, 'If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. '"

Evolution was proven to be true a few years ago anyway and the bible doesn't say how exactly God created life, or anything else for that matter.
