what does /sci/ think of zen?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen

is it possible to be grounded in science but still be a back to nature shaman?

I want to be a power engineer but the problems I see with people all around me just make me wish there was a way to focus on how I can change things for the better at the moment they are happening, and from what I've been experiencing in this chaotic world of mine and the attitude I've been having about it all is really making me feel like a zen master.

I don't really want to post my life story here since this isn't /adv/ but I'd just like to get yalls take on how to deal with the shittiness of the world and how you are trying to improve it

I mean when you think about all the problems of the future and what people are going through right now even, and how you stand in the bigger scheme of things in trying to make even a little mark

You can be grounded in science and still care about your zodiac sign, I suppose.

>> No.3878130

The world is intrinsically shitty. There's no way to improve it. The best we can hope for are small moments of peace.

There are tons of engineers who are pious Christians or Muslims. Being Zen is hardly in contradiction with the science involved in engineering work.

What about in relative terms?

Improving your world as much as you can while not trying to focus as much on THE world?

The secret sauce of your question is this.

Religion = Philosophy
Magic = Science

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. -- Arthur C. Clarke

"In the Ancient Orient, all religion was more or less a mystery and there was no divorce from it of philosophy. The popular theology, taking the multitude of allegories and symbols for realities, degenerated into a worship of the celestial luminaries, of imaginary Deities with human feelings, passions, appetites, and lusts, of idols, stones, animals, reptiles." -- Albert Pike, Fellowcraft via Morals and Dogma

Philosophy + Science = What you're after via your question. And this is ok! Also humanity needs myths and legends in order to survive the psychological onslaught of the sterile sanity most people force on others.

>> No.3878146

I think people love to misunderstand it and end up making up some crazy bullshit, because of Zen's more poetic approach.

If you must get into Buddhism Theravada is relatively more palatable to the average western mind and covers the same material in a much more straightforward fashion, but it just happens that Mahayana schools are much more widespread.

This is very true. Just look at how many people are totally addicted to hollywood movies, TV Shows & documentaries.

Science isn't supposed to be easy. Nor is it supposed to be an unchanging set of beliefs.

It's supposed to adjust it's views based on what's observed.

Religion denies observation so that faith is preserved.

Learn before you DERP.

Religion is to keep you happy and confident enough to believe that your work will mean something, thus allowing you to be more productive in your field, whether it be in Plumbing or Improper Integrals. Now stop being huttburt and let people have their life: not everyone can face the harsh possibility of a purposeless universe. To act out against this is to be a bigot, or worse, cut down on efficiency.

Excuse me? Atheism is the disbelief in the assumptions of religion.

No evidence why is there a reason to believe?

It is entirely much more ignorant to believe in something without evidence than to not because there is no evidence.

Ahaha that actually made me laugh.

Ignorance for abit of wisdom, that is not a fair trade to me.

any form of meditation that is stolen and monopolised by religious or spiritual people is turned to bullshit. Real meditation happens when you do something you love, something you're good at, something in which you can achieve.

Thats the other thing i hate about religion, this "special relationship with god" puts people on a high horse where they think they are better than everyone else, straight ignorance, i talk down to religious people and its because of this exact reason.

There isn't enough protest against the ignorance disease.

>but i was able to appreciate it
Then i guess you do belong in it, takes some mental deficiency to appreciate something built on ignorance, atleast some people dont get a choice and have to believe in it and grow up and never have a different opinion cause its what they know, your parents didnt have to be stupid for you, you did that all by yourself.

what makes people think zen is a religion like all the other bullshit out there?
