He is technically right, because first world is basically defined to mean US and NATO and second world to mean China, the Soviet Union and the old communist countries.

This is no laughing matter. A lot of schools here (in the southern US) offer exceptionally good educations, but those religious schools you mention taint even the reputations of the good public universities.

Also, some of the public schools have let religious bigotry filter into their policies. For example, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee's flagship university and consistently ranked in the top 100 public universities in the US by Forbes, sometimes as high as 50is, has a written policy against homosexual practices on campus. It's sad really.
