What's the deal with string theory?
Why does /sci/ hate it so much?
Are you faggots just jelly cause you don't understand it?

>> No.3847736

theory implies that there is some experimental evidence backing it.

String theory is a theory in the same sense as film theory.

>> No.3847748

/sci/ is mostly undergrads. They don't have a concept of research. They rate fields of inquiry based on how much is known about it right now. Since pretty much zilch is known experimentally about quantum gravity, studying the subject is shit in their minds.

good explanation for why /sci/ hates creation science

>> No.3847761

If you use String Theory as a proper noun then I have no problem.
I have a problem when people do not add the hypothesis qualifier.

Changing the name of a hypothesis or theory based on how much evidence there is for it is a terrible idea; you wouldn't be able to even mention it without taking a position on it.

Not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens

When used in the context of science the words theory, law, and hypothesis have meaning. Using the word theory to describe a hypothesis is disingenuous.

Probably because it's a mathematical framework and lacks experimental evidence at this present moment in time.

String theory is still being pursued

Aliens...

>> No.3847927

Because there is no experimental evidence, nor is there any conceivable way of experimentation in the near future with current technology.

hey sci x/ here got some news for you aliens proove string theory. eat fat cocks and walk the line we vibing bro

Sure they have meaning, just not the meaning you think they have. A theory differs from a hypothesis or law by its breadth of applicability, not its degree of confirmation. A law need not have any confirmation at all; it just means a mathematical relationship.
