I blogged that last week. It had 300 views then. The next day it had a quarter of a million views. Now it has 4 million views.

And I was just making a comment on how it has exploded in popularity. You seem to be implying that I stopped liking the ability to give the deaf the sense of hearing as soon as a single YouTube video got more than a thousand views.

She is only hard of hearing, not completely deaf. She has used hearing aids for years. That is why she can speak decent English. However, the implant provides a clarity that she apparently wasn't prepared for and allowed her to make out what her own voice sounds like for the first time.

Well that sucks.

Is there a way to temporarily turn off someones ability to hear? Maybe we can have some kid grow up unable to hear then turn it on when hes 20 or so and see what happens.

It looks like a great tattoo to me.

If I was deaf I'd probably get tattoos too. If one can't express oneself verbally then one might make up with it by expressing oneself visually. Did I say "one" too much?

Holy shit. Gaining sight back would be so much more shocking than gaining hearing, as sight's so much more a part of our life.

I can only imagine how weird and confusing the world must have felt for him. Sad story.

Some people are born completely deaf. I'm not sure about how the implant works so I don't know if the implant depends on some part of our inner ear to be there.

So things like depth perception and judging distance are learned?

I've been wondering, because my girlfriend is a Korean International student and last year she wanted to get a driver's license, so she came to me to teach her how to drive.
It was most frustrating few months of my life. She couldn't accurately judge distance or speed within a reasonable measurement. She would change lanes in front of traffic coming up twice as fast as her, or be afraid to turn at an intersection when the closest car is 200 feet away going 30mph.
I really don't know how to make her understand something that's almost innate for me.
She did get her license back in April, but it took 4 tries.

Saw that. That was a lot more subtle. The baby suddenly stopped what it was doing, looked up and looked around at the people. Cool stuff.
