I'm just wondering.

Do you intelligent/academic guys ever waste time playing video games?

I don't mean other hobbies that could be considered a waste of time, but video games specifically.

>> No.3798907

I do, but I'm not intelligent, really. It's not that hard to become a ME and I like to play the vidya.

>> No.3798911

I do not know how many play, but there have been studies showing that surgeons who play video games are on average better surgeons than those who do not.

I've felt for many years that video games were amongst the most unproductive hobbies a person could have. Studies like this always confuse me, because it seems like people are just trying to grasp at any possible benefits to playing video games over other things.

>> No.3798941

Med student here.
Don't play as much as I used to before college, but I still play when I have the time.
I'll probably finish the witcher 2 in a few months at the rate i'm playing it.

>> No.3798944

Would be ignorant to assume all academics do or don't, can't decide who i'd hate more , academic who despises all people who plays video games and snubs them, or the academics who play games as part of a weird obsession (CBA)

There are plenty of fun and distracting things that are much more productive. Video games generally require a much higher time investment than most hobbies.

Playing with your friends now and again is fine, but some people spend up to 4 hours a day playing video games, which isn't unusual to people who play video games as a hobby.

Interactive mediums like video games tend to improve hand/eye coordination, which is why surgeons that play video games may see some benefits to their profession.

Also anything that relieves stress is beneficial.

I've played video games addictivly for the last decade or so, and now I'm trying to really cut back and get some work done towards my degree. I'm finding it incredibly difficult to do though and it's putting me behind in my studies. More so, I really want to get into reading as a hobby over gaming as I see it as more productive, but whenever I'm not playing games I feel almost anxious like I'm missing out on owning some scrubs.

I think I might be addicted

What do?

And for myself - Europa Universalis and the Total War games have been instrumental in developing my understanding of history. Far moreso than a decade of school even came close to.

No, i don't.
Many of my (less intelligent) friends do, so i don't 'hate' gamers, but personally i think it's a stupid waste of time, an easy serotonin fix for losers who can't succeed irl.
Don't get me wrong, i know video games are a form of art, and some have great stories. I usually only install games if i'm told they have a great story. But you have to waste so many hours killing stupid enemies that it's just not worth the effort, it feels retarded. It's like those books which contain ONE good idea, that can be told in 5 lines, but expand it into a 400 pages ragingly boring shit. Not worth the effort.
