ATTENTION /SCI/!

NEUTRINOS GOING AT SUPER-LIGHT VELOCITIES IS CONTEMPLATED ON THE STANDARD-MODEL EXTENSION AT HIGH ENERGIES!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutrino

>Even though supernova observations indicate that neutrinos propagate at the speed of light, it is not clear whether this result holds at higher energies. In particular, in the context of the Standard-Model Extension,[29][30][31] a realistic effective theory that includes Lorentz invariance violations, neutrinos experience Lorentz-violating oscillations and can travel faster than light at high energies.

THAT IS ALL.

sticky this now mods.

>> No.3785586

so...

no FTL travel?

>> No.3785591

>>3785586
yes there is FTL travel but only for neutrinos

>> No.3785593

But that is boring!

We want science-foundation-shattering discoveries!

Actually, if you read OP, it's contemplated in one of the current models.

No, it means it conforms with theory. We predicted that the neutrino can go faster than light.

How? This wasn't about traveling faster than light, it is about how a something broke a fundamental rule of our understanding.

Why is it that people assume FTL = time traveling?

>> No.3785747

>>3785743
going FTL is the same as traveling through time backward
so if their neutrinos are going FTL they're time traveling
that suggests, at a minimum, that we can send information into the past

>> No.3785769

I'm not surprised honestly. It's what science does, we take pre-existing theories and update them as our technological capabilities improve. It usually comes as a huge leap once every 200-300 though this past century has been the century of tiny steps forward.
Being a sci-fi fan, I am giddy to have lived to see some form of FTL.

>> No.3787293

>>3785747
Not like it matters unless we can receive such information and interpret it.

>> No.3787305

Well, this proves my theory that someone has already written theories contemplating every single possible violation of the known laws of physics.
