Any astronomers can clear up some questions I have about parsecs?

1. If the parsec relies on the distance of Earth from the Sun as part of its measurement, doesn't that mean the definition of a parsec is as variable as the Earth's orbit is not perfectly circular?

2. Because of its variability, does this means it's not actually used as a serious measurement by scientists?

3. How can Han Solo have done the Kessel Run in 18 parsecs if parsecs are a term that is specific to Earth and our sun and can't be measured from any other planet or sun in the galaxy as the angles would be different, and Han Solo is in a galaxy far, far away?

Read up parallax.

pretty sure it's the average of the apoapsis and periapsis

1. parsec is derived from the astronomical unit which IS constant as it is the MEAN earth-sun distance.

2. parsec is constant, not variable. it IS used by scientists.

3. yes, parsec is distance not time. han solo = master-troll.

1. 1 AU is defined exactly. People just say colloquially that it's the distance from the earth to the sun.

2. It's not variable.

3. They could have their own definition of parsec.

>3. yes, parsec is distance not time. han solo = master-troll.

That's not really what I meant. More that Han Solo has never been to Earth so he can't even know the word parsec because it uses 1 AU in its definition and someone who had never been to Earth can't know what 1 AU is.

hmm...that too.
but then star wars isnt meant to be taken too seriously and there are minor trolls placed throughout the episodes that only the uber-geeks will actually spot (ET is in the phantom menace...true story)

In the Extended Universe that Han Solo quote has been explained away as a feat of navigation in the hostile and unpredictable environment of Maw, near Kessel.

A bad ship would need to steer well away from the black holes of the Maw and do a longer run, while a better ship could make a tighter route around them, with a shorter route.

Galaxy far far away has humans who speak English.

If you rationalize that, there's no reason not to rationalize particular terminology they use.

troll or hipster?

as in, the 1st of the 6 films.
and yes, the prequel series does still count as star wars, no matter how fucking inferior it is to what one might call the 'real star wars'

both

>as in, the 1st of the 6 films.
there are only 3 movies. the rest are fan fictions that happened to be realized in theatres and on DVDs

I don't mind the prequel series as long as you're talking about the book version.

However, Natalie Portman's tits.
