This one isn't actually /sci/ related, unlike the previous sagas, and will just be a one-shot as it's a single large building - but last thread, a lot of people were interested in the exploration and photos as much as the science/kit-rescue aspects.

Pic is very much related.

/sci/ talks so much shit about religion, but one thing I have noticed is that religious institutions include some of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen.

Also, hospitals.

Shall proceed then... might take a while due to the captcha blight.

As you might surmise from the first post, it's a church, but one that's been burnt to hell - no pun intended. It caught my eye as I was scouting another building nearby, which I've had my eye on for some time. Previous both have been inaccessible, but since this one was quite clearly cremated, I reasoned there must be an entry to it, and indeed there was, through an old window.

Sadly the first people to enter abandoned buildings are usually thieves or arsonists, so there's a small window between 'accessible' and 'gutted', and I fell on the wrong side of it.

The photos were taken while proceeding around the church clockwise - we entered by the altar.

>>3772393

Religious buildings need to instill a sense of humbleness, so they're generally very grand buildings, and large. Nearly every other building in the world has to be practical. Plus, the enourmous wealth of the religious institutions helps.

Not saying it's bad, just sayain.

so... burned cathedral/chapel, looks pretty old so its probably European. (someone identify the type of architecture used in the windows)
looks nice enough to renovate (prob under renovation if looked at from other angle
tinyeye image search dosent find anything
(someone ID the tree type and find where they are the most common in europe)
most likely cristian church
seems similar to chpels iv seen in spain

One day I'll do an asylum, there's a few around that are in reasonable condition still, with varying levels of security.

Previous photo was the altar, this one is standing by it, looking back over the main part of the church.

It seems the fire was mostly on the roof? I'm unsure how it didn't ignite the pews with all the burning timbre, but somehow they survived, along with anything with a sufficient firebreak.

That's incredible. The old walls must have saved the majority of the church, and even the roof collapsing didn't destroy much.

It's in Engand, fairly standard church around here, there's about 20 in any large town and at least 1 in most minor villages. Often closed due to a lack of budget/priests, they make fairly good targets for vandals and arsonists, so this happens a lot, relatively speaking.

The surviving roof...

I like your interpretation of the purpose of the grandiosity of religious buildings.

Now explain hospitals, excluding the obvious wealth factor. I have my own interpretation, but I want to hear yours.

Most modern hospitals are very practical buildings, indistinguishable from government offices and the like.

Stained glass window that survived the destruction, this is on the right-hand arm of the cross layout. There was a small room to the left of this area, which contained a battered organ, a bit of mouldy furniture, and a safe of all things... they've got to keep the kiddy porn somewhere I suppose.

There's also a wall safe near where I entered, I may have pictured it later in the set, can't recall offhand. Both are intact, but based on past experience, they'll be empty. If you take anything when leaving a place, it's the stuff that's small and valuable.

I haven't noticed hospitals being particularly grand. As >>3772488 said, modern hospitals tend to be very practical. I'd imagine that the train of thought behind a particularly fancy hospital is trying to induce a sense of calm to the patients.

But I don't know, though. I haven't been in too many hospitals, and those I have been are fairly modern.

Three things you find in old buildings - pidgeons, plants, and spiders. This church was mostly full of spiders, as you'll see later on, the beams everywhere provided fantastic web anchor points, the walls shield them from the worst of the weather, while the open roof allows flies access.

Regarding the design of churches, as mentioned they're partly to instill humbleness, but there's more to it than a lot of people realise, especially on the older churches. A lot of the early ones had carven animals, and pagan gods on the sides, to appeal to the pagan populace and aid their conversion. The altar itself is named such as it stems from the sacrificial altars. Often churches have 'green men'/foliate heads inside, although I saw none in this church, and those seem to relate to the pagan woodwose, but nobody's entirely sure. There was a good 6 part documentary about the design and history of church architecture a while ago on the BBC, but I can't recall the name offhand.

...however, it was simply a boiler room, although I had to get down there first to confirm that. There appeared to be no crypt at all, although the floor was too covered with beams to look for any 'here lies...' plaques.

I should clarify that leaving ground level is generally unwise on these explores - unmaintained ladders and stairs have resuled in many trapped, maimed and otherwise waylaid explorers. As it happened I wasn't alone on this explore, and had enough nearby to allow myself to escape if the ladder decided to give way (hence the random wood I'd thrown in the stairway)

The view down the west side of the church, taken from next to my entry point. The other wall safe is to the right of me, out of the picture.

Interestingly, when I first looked through the window, it appeared that there was a lit candle on a table at the end of the church. Obviously now, I know it to be a coke can on the font, and the red light was simply reflected sunlight, but at the time it looked rather uncanny.

And I have no idea about the chair, so don't ask.

I'd bet the chair was in the "attic" of the church, but never actually got burned. There looks like collapsed wood around the ground there that wasn't charred, so that'd be my guess. Fire collapsed the roof, but never reached the chair or the roof around it.

The 'Lab Raid' saga, five or six threads about a year ago, detailing my exploration of an abandoned science lab and factory complex. It was an excellent joint effort, with /sci/ identifying the equipment worth salvaging, and directing me where to go on my next trip there.

>>3772688

There was no attic, not even a belltower. The bells are mounted in the outer wall above the main door, and pulled by ropes inside.. sadly the ropes had burnt away, otherwise we'd have given them a good ringing before we left.

This is the outside roof, the huge dent is above what transpired to be the boiler room. Slightly cropped to remove a line of cars.

Then you sir, are a wanker. There are so many abandoned white-wall buildings like offices, factories etc, this is a form of art set in stone, not a canvas.
