OP, two reasons. Hominids could only evolve to dominate the world because there was not already an established world dominating species. And we are the only intelligent hominid species because we killed the others tens of thousands of years ago.

Humans intelligence/behaviour comes from the process of moving from jungle primates to plains hunters. We developed complex communication for our hunting and becoming up right freed our hands for the creation of ever elaborate tools.

Why? Well, the universe is the way it is, and the universe evolved according to the laws of physics to become how it is today. That depends on some initial conditions, the rules of change aka physics, and the chance along the way for the quantum events.

We know physics is true because of the abundance of evidence for the laws of physics. We are able to extrapolate backwards to some initial conditions. And there's some chance which has no explanation besides "That's just the way it happened".

Because we aren't the only intelligent species. Reptilian Aliens are here also. If humans evolved from mammals then it's even more likely that an intelligent species evolved from Dinosaurs when they had even more time for evolution to take place then mammals with a much more competitive environment.
