I feel bad for people who went to no name colleges to study something demanding like math or physics. At my grad school there are tons of people who are doing top notch research with famous (well, in science) professors who went to undergrad schools no one ever heard of (this includes me.)

Mandarin has much better prospects going into the future than Japanese or any other language for that matter. I have studied it for a year, and the language itself is actually quite simple. I hate to admit it, but in many ways, it is much more logical and simpler than English. I had previously studied French in high school, which was ok, but the grammar was a bitch. In Mandarin, the grammar is actually easier than English.
