I feel bad for people who went to no name colleges to study something demanding like math or physics. At my grad school there are tons of people who are doing top notch research with famous (well, in science) professors who went to undergrad schools no one ever heard of (this includes me.)

if you say that you go to a no name school to study math/physics, people still look down on you

if you say you go to yale to study women's studies, people will be amazed

thankfully, i don't care that much for those opinions, but it kinda sucked when you were studying grad level analysis and topology courses during your junior year only to have people look down on you for not being in famous ivy league level schools. people just don't know.

I'll be starting Princeton in a few days.
You pick your classes during the first week of orientation, so I don't know anything yet. I will be studying chemical engineering though, and I plan on learning Chinese because that's what everyone there does.

Mandarin has much better prospects going into the future than Japanese or any other language for that matter. I have studied it for a year, and the language itself is actually quite simple. I hate to admit it, but in many ways, it is much more logical and simpler than English. I had previously studied French in high school, which was ok, but the grammar was a bitch. In Mandarin, the grammar is actually easier than English.

However, good luck trying to pronounce x and q correctly.

why would you want to speak a language where everyone is already rich? the point is to cash in during their economic boom. besides, we already speak english which is the #1 western/rich language until the end of time.

Actually I can read characters a lot better than I can write them. When I see the characters, it helps to jog my memory whereas trying to write something from nothing is quite difficult.

Also, doesn't 文言 usually refers to Chinese spoken language? I'm still learning babby's first Chinese, so I'm not certain.

I think it's like this for a lot of people. If you are lazy and don't focus on writing characters from the beginning it becomes a lot more annoying to learn them later on.
