Let's talk about coffee, /sci/. Coffee makes many people more productive, but do you think it makes people more intelligent?

Indirectly I would say yes; person drinks coffee and is more productive, that person can then do more work and possibly figure things out faster. What do you guys think?

It might make someone feel more motivated and productive but that may not actually be what is happening.

>> No.3647426

That is such a lot of crap, you're not more productive because you drink coffee. In the end, coffee takes away from your productiveness. It extends the time in which you can be productive, but that time and some more is taken away from the next day or week.

>> No.3647441

You need both inductive and deductive reasoning to innovate, solve, explore and develop ideas, caffeine doesn't help deduction which requires that you calmly and patiently plan and follow through set methods. It might motivate you to be pro-active and search for new perspectives on things but it does not necessarily improve your ability to do so, so it may not enhance inductive reasoning either.

I suppose in situations where the negatives are less relevant and the positives are more relevant a certain amount of caffeine might be beneficial, all things considered I would limit yourself to 3 cups of coffee a day and don't drink any caffeine less than 8 hours before sleep.

>> No.3647446

In some ways, yes.

>Likewise, in tests of simple reaction time, choice reaction time, incidental verbal memory, and visuospatial reasoning, participants who regularly drank coffee were found to perform better on all tests, with a positive relationship between test scores and the amount of coffee regularly drunk. Elderly participants were found to have the largest effect associated with regular coffee drinking.[11] Another study found that women over the age of 80 performed significantly better on cognitive tests if they had regularly drunk coffee over their lifetimes.[12]

Yes, there are many aspects to what we call intelligence. That coffee makes one "smarter in some ways" is a perfectly reasonable statement.

Based on my reaction, it should be banned. First I get high, worse than methamphetamine, then I come down, and eight hours later I lose the ability to deal with small stresses and get angry at little shit that shouldn't bother me. Apparently my adrenal glands are squeezed dry. Coffee is nasty stuff. It isn't the caffeine, because I can consume green tea and caffeinated sodas without ill effect. Coffee probably has a bunch of other related alkaloid poisons that mess with me. I know a couple who refuse to give up coffee and they take anti-depressants. Those are just other forms of reaction time, they are very well engrained or instinctive processes in the brain which have just been sped up due to caffeine, they are not complex cognitive tasks or unique problems that require calm methodical attention.

>> No.3647549

>>3647539
the thing about actual science is that it's hard to test extremely complex things and form proper controls for them. so we have to break them down into simple things that can be experimented on and validated with proper controls.

basically, you're a dumbshit, and essentially every study on caffeine has shown higher mental faculties.

So in other words you're arguing semantics.

If caffeine makes someone too stressed and on the edge to solve a puzzle but has a faster reaction time that means their intelligence has increased because reaction time now means intelligence?

>implying spiders are any useful comparison to humans, people know the effects of these drugs on humans very well. to test it on spiders is interesting for the novelity of their action, but as a comparison to humans it is very foolish. srsly are spiders mammals? do they have brains like us? do they even have 2 eyes like us? 4 legs? nah dude, nah, they have 4 fucking eyes and 8 fucking legs.

what these spiders are experiencing and how they are behaving is based on very different details then a human's experience with the same drugs. Also dosing is a factor the people giving those spiders drugs might have dosed them proportional to body mass, which seams wise enough, but imo a better dose would be one based on body mass and brain mass/density.
