What's the most science/math oriented thing you've done as a hobby, that's not associated with academics or your career?

>> No.3637692

Coming up with a programming project.

The question is a bit difficult, if you exclude reading books on math/physics, which aren't about a subject you actually do in academia.

I put oobleck in a subwoofer cone once.

I learned DE even though I have virtually no use for them (through tutorial.math.lamar.edu). I used to make up random algebraic theorms for multiples of i when I was in HS. All I can use in RL basically is basic Calculus and Statistics :/

Probably building my computer with unknown parts stolen from my dad's company.

Had to troubleshoot a lot of shit, but it wasn't that bad in the end.

Ended up with something like this, very bizarre.

Oh how I hate this fucking stupid picture of this anime girl stretching her arms like this WILL YOU STOP FUCKING POSTING IT ON SCI EVERY FUCKING OTHER DAY

I MEAN WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU

Yes I mad

I calculated the speed of water coming out of my water hose using
<div class="math"> d = \frac{v^2sin2\theta}{g}</div>
But I had to model the trajectory of the thing in a graph and use derivatives to find the initial angle.

I scienced a wi-fi cantenna from a #20 vegetable can - had to do research, figure out the focal points and harmonics of the enclosure and compute dB.

Using it as a server for lol video games.

It's only 1066 MHz RAM, so it's not that great. I didn't really have much in mind for this desktop other than school stuff though.

What do you think I should do with it?

Hobby electronics.
All my 4 high school years.
Lots of different types of op-amp based astable multivibrators.
Some simplish TTL digital counters.
Loads of non-academic micro-controller fun projects.

>The feel where I went into Electrical Engineering on a whim, and never had an interest prior to it while everyone else I know in my major did something crazy in High School like robotics or whatnot.

I honestly wish I started earlier...

-built my first computer when i was 13
-learned programming languages for fun until WoW came out in 2004
[huge intellectual gap thanks to teenage years and alcohol]
-got involved with foss, gnu/linux, etc
-recently began teaching myself many subjects for the hell of it through khan academy
-using what i learned from teaching myself calculus, i made an "attribute tree" (similar to pso characters) based on human qualities and traits and then graphed it, found the area, and made different rankings with it. sounds stupid (it is) and complicated, but it was entertaining for a little while.

the only hobbies i have anymore are gf, school, and making money. growing up sucks.

>> No.3637776

Academics and Career are engineering.

Hobbies are more on the art/humanities side.

I want to be a pseudo-renaissance man.

Here's a true story, my friend was into programming and web design at the age of 13. By the age of 15, he created a website called Videohybrid, one of the first full-length movie video streaming websites of its kind. Our circle of friends helped him upload videos onto the servers, it became very popular soon.

At the age of 16 though, a competitive website of the same nature offered to buy him out for 500,000, or something along those lines. He sold it immediately, and within a few months, the copyright infringement police started cracking down on said websites.

Anyways, the fucker didn't even go to college, and got a starting position as a web-developer the moment he graduated from high school. Now I think he gets paid some ridiculous amount for an annual salary, 90k+

>Most MMOs
>People slaving away for hours on grinding for "resources"
>Find a niche in the market
>Buy from a huge number of providers for a set price, incentive driven by consistency and efficiency in buying their goods.
>Find a huge number of clients and sell at a marginally higher price for a set percentage gain, incentive driven by a constant supply, reasonable prices, and efficiency in trade.
>Diversify your business to other resources as well, expand it to its limits
>Become the next Warren Buffet in MMO form.
