Grad school atm. Gonna try to maneuver myself into a good PhD program (and later job), doing research I can respect myself for doing.

Also trying to cultivate my hobbies (programming a java game currently) and educate myself in general, so that I can avoid having a mid-life crisis over a life wasted on doing shit I never wanted to when they hand me my PhD.

Sometimes I worry about the wisdom of spending a lifetime in preparation for that final moment of introspection before I die, which may well never come if I slip into senility first like my father is.

Excuse me, but I don't think YOU know what the industry is like.

It is true that people are underpaid, as in makes less than they deserve. You definitely earn more working for MS/google or some bank or whatever. But then take into account all those other fuckers that end up in random-company-X doing shit who cares. These people earns even less and probably hates themselves (more than the average programmer).

You're not "the oompa loompa", but you are expected to meet demands which are set high, because you're always doing new exiting shit where it's not easy to say how long something will really take. Then there's the crunch of course, where you may very well end up working to late night. But unless you work for a really shitty company you get compensated in one way or another, and it can actually be a quite nice experience as well.

Game programming is by no means the easiest type of programming. Especially if you work close to the engine you're most likely doing things that has never been done before. Even if you work more with game logic, it can still be quite exciting and definitely challenging to make it all work and give the player a pleasant experience.

That said, programmers at game companies are amont the best, they work harder than most, and they earn less (than they deserve), BUT, they get to do what they love.. It's a trade-off, simple as that.

>> No.3567670

>>3567665
me again.
As for the kid wanting to be a game developer, he never even said he wanted to be a pogrammer. But if that's the case, I suggest you start looking at what you can do with some basic for loops and shit in whatever language you find. You will notice quickly if that's something for you. Otherwise there's graphics and sounds that needs to be done, then all the more "administrative" stuff which is more difficult to say how you get into. A friend of mine recently got a job as a producer for instance, although he studied to become a graphics artist. As for game designer, don't even try starting that way.

I've got about the next 10 years planned out

Currently: In San Diego, working weekends, going to CC for transfer units
Once I have enough units plan to move and transfer to Portland, Oregon; University of Portland
Continue on with my English major, get my 4 year
Study abroad in Japan for my Masters for another 2 years
Come back to states to get my teaching credentials
Teach middle school or high school for another year or two
Go back to Japan or stay in the states to complete my PhD program
Can then teach English at a college level, or stay in Japan and teach ESL instead of pampering Americans on semantics and argumentative/literature outlines.

After that, it's all up in the air.
Feels good to have a solid plan for the next decade.

- Become very wealthy
- Fuck around politics with influential lobbyists for the promotion of sciences and space, especially new inventions or proposals that could be huge (such as the LFTR today)
- Replace left arm with a equal or outperforming robotic arm by 2035
- Maybe, just maybe set forth the Technocratic Republic of Sci in motion. But Tasmania is looking less like a viable candidate, I'm considering MASSIVE geodesic domes in Western Antarctica that can be climate controlled.

The 2 man NWE habitats will be $35k, fit on any boat trailer for easy transport and deploy via any boat ramp.

>Still, everybody makes plans, few follow through.

Underwater communities are coming. I'm involved in an organization making it happen. It's not pie in the sky, we've got members that include the foremost divers and habitat specialists in the world, including an ex-NASA bioengineer who has built several and is currently building a proof of concept 4 man habitat for a dry run 25 feet deep in 2012.

Pic related, the prototype habitat back in 1998. It's the design basis for the newer, larger NWE habitat that will be mass produced and sold to anyone with the money and desire to live underwater.

It's strange and has been the stuff of science fiction for so long it's hard to imagine it really happening, but that does occur from time to time. We switched to discs for video. We're switching to electric cars. There's a vast manned facility orbiting overhead as we speak. We live in exciting times.

There are a few steps between where we are now and being able to go out and buy a habitat. The proof of concept habitat is about 85% complete. Assuming all goes well on its maiden mission in 2012, and assuming we're able to attract enough investors to buy the equipment and factory space for mass production, they could be on the market a year or two later. All that I can reasonably guarantee is that the mission will take place. We're close enough to that milestone that it would take a lot to prevent it at this point. Whether or not the rest follows depends on our luck and ability to sell investors on the notion that there's a significant number of people interested in vacationing underwater. Dive clubs, marine biology and earth science programs at universities, wealthy enthusiasts, retirees...There's a large enough market I think, it's just a matter of getting someone with the money to invest to see it that way. What would really help is some kind of pop culture phenomenon involving underwater colonization. Disney recently optioned 'Dark Life' for a film trilogy, it's set in a future where people have begun to homestead on the sea floor. If it takes off the way they hope it does that would be tremendously helpful in convincing investors of the popularity of underwater living. Perfect timing too, it comes out in later 2012.

It does seem to be all about a concept 'taking off'.
I mean, we have efficient solar power that has yet to 'take off' in a massive way, electric cars, geothermal heating, ect. Everybody is so distracted by politics and the the rest of the doomstorm that the future is something people don't want to think about much. I sometimes feel like if the social climate today was closer to the mid to late 1990's, there would be more enthusiasm for risky ventures such as building an underwater hotel. In not only a bear-economy but a bear-nation, such things seem like pipedreams, even if we can literally do them.
(ie: we know we can put people on the moon, yet we never went back. Generalization, yes, but you understand my point I hope)

I don't want to give the wrong impression though, I actively WANT the future to be this awesome, not just for me but my future grandchildren and their children. Maybe I've just got a bit of pessimism...

Yeah

I wasnt using my trip.

Im really into the subject of tonality. I read a book called "genesis of a music" which reads like a combination between a world history of music tonality, and the real mechanics and mathematics of how music works. Ive built my own instruments with this knowledge.

Anyway, Id love to ramble on about it. If you dont know anything, or want to know more you can email me if you want. ccstearn@asu.edu

I need to go right now

I go to Arizona State University. Ive been trying to get a job all summer and Ive had no luck. I think the job market as a whole sucks. Im about to go give a resume to a mechanic. But I was looking on company websites. I cant tell you about how many jobs had requirements for people like econ, or finance majors. It just has universal demand.

Well, that's helpful I have trading experience I have been playing the Forex markets since the start of High-School, also traded my first stock at 12, I have a portfolio which is roughly up 63% of it's initial input, and my family owns a small business which I grew up working in. Still I only have B/A grades and my family won't approve of me majoring in Econ unless I go to an Ivy. I' just venting...whatever.

B/As? Thats better than me when I entered college.

Maybe you could make a case to your parents. Tell them what I told you about the above average income. I am studying economics in the business department (Bachelor of Science), which I think is immensely better than taking econ in the liberal arts department.

I go to a state school that is still pretty good. My department is pretty good, and we have two nobel prize winners in our econ department.

Future plans: create a business. Collaborate with many of the people I know and create a think-tank. Use think-tank ideas to create more businesses/products. If all this is successful go back to college and learn bio-chem and genetics.

I have a million ideas every day but no money to test or implement any of them. When I get some money and connections I can tap into my head. Hopefully liquid diamonds will spew out.

- Starting second year, physics specialization
- Not decided on what I want to do after, but maybe a PhD in biomedical engineering
- Lifting weights
- Reading a variety of books
- Learning how to pick up pretty much any girl I want (mainly cause I'm really picky)
- Playing guitar and singing in a band. We'll be playing at a music festival for charity I mainly organized
- Manager/Promoter for a really good alternative-rock/post-rock band
- Working at a high-paying job (double+ what my friends make), only downside is that I'm on call. I work all the time, though.
- Enjoy fashion and I look quite /fa/, except I'm not a hipster

I'm Israeli, there are no other branches of the military. I suppose what we call the the army is your military, since it contains our air force and navy. Also, a military service of at least three years is mandatory here for all high school graduates. I'm starting my first year of college on the 29th. I pick up fast on Math & Science, but sometimes it's a bit too much and it reminds me of this picture.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do, I would enjoy being an Elementary school teacher for any grade from Kindergartener -2nd grade (since the kids actually still care about school at that age) and it overall be a much simpler and relaxed life. I could see myself pursuing creative writing, but that's like saying I want to make my living by becoming a famous Actor....

I do want to put my time at school to good use and wind up with a respectable, well-paying career such as one in the field of Medicine...

I don't know what to do, I guess I'll just post this on anonymous image board, I'm sure that will help.
