Windows, because I enjoy being able to install programs in a couple minutes with 2-3 clicks as opposed to downloading the full program source and waiting 4 hours while it gets compiled from scratch.

I remember when grandma used to compile code from scratch. Totally worth it, none of the store bought code was as good as grandma's.

I use Windows 7 Pro / Business for most of my stuff. Linux at work to ensure that the shit compiles on unix-like platforms and sometimes because gcc is cooler than msvc.

>gcc is cooler than msvc.

So you prefer having no IDE and having to remember thousands of command line parameters as opposed to, y'know, the opposite of that?

Ubuntu

Used to have Windows Vista, but when it started taking 10 minutes to boot up, I switched and never looked back.

Funny, I switched to Ubuntu after viruses ate XP, but I went out and PAID MONEY for a copy of Vista (didn't have an XP backup disk) after realizing how fucking slow EVERYTHING in Ubuntu was. Sure, it booted up faster, but at what cost? Also, case-sensitive filenames were pissing me off bigtime. (Though I do still keep an ubuntu bootable flash drive in the closet for emergencies.)

If windows gets slow or pwned by viruses, I just create a recovery partition, copy all my porn over there, make a list of all the programs I have installed, then format and reinstall everything. Doesn't take more than 2-3 hours, is actually strangely satisfying to do, and I don't have to run an OS written by amateurs.

I have two desktops (a 1998 Dell 1.8 Mhz single core, a 2009 Dell 3.0 Mhz Dual Core Duo E8400 and a year-old Dell Inspiron Dual Core 1525 Inspiron.

I run Win7 Ultimate on all of them. I installed Win7 in Sept of '09 on the desktops, the laptop came with last November, and none of the comps has so much as hiccuped since. No virii, no Trojans, nothing. Comodo firewall and avast! anti-virus on all of them.

The E8400 still boots in about 45 seconds. Win7 has been near bullet-proof, and I have completely changed my mind about Microsoft products, except for IE, which still sucks ballsacks.

HPs are nice machines. I used to own one but sold it to my neighbor.
This single core Optiplex has been running 24/7 for the last five years (I'm the second owner), except for rebooting after updates and that time when I put in a new video card, more RAM and a second Seagate HDD in it three years ago. The Dual Core E8400 Vostro has been running more or less continuously since I bought it two years ago.

They seem to do the job very well.
