I can't stand my coworkers anymore. Somehow we got into some discussion about science vs religion. Their whole argument was something like this. "Well how is some scientist telling you how the world works and someone telling you how god did it is different?". I tried so fucking hard to explain evidence and observation. "Yeah that's just like the bible.". I want to kill everybody.

Dan Dennett answers that - and more! - not-succinctly here.

In short, scientists when they make a claim have built up trust with the people. Having trust is evidence based. We trust that they have performed the falsifiable experiments of which they claim.

Religious "experts" claim not to know. They make it a point of honor of in fact not knowing. We can and do have trust that they think they're right, and that they think they've had personal experiences, but there is no trust that they've sat down and performed the observations of their (lack of) falsifiable predictions.

Remember dude, at least 10% of the world population is pretty smart. That will be a billion people soon.

The retards can be fixed with augments or gene therapy eventually.

You can perform the stuff you read in science books if you have the equipment. you can verify it using experiments. IT'S CORRECT.

of course, it's all just paradigm after paradigm- science is just a model, nothing more. but it's a damn good model and so far, very fucking stable, considering all that we have built so far.

I hate to merge two /sci/ troll topics... religion and biology (not science), but evolution actually translates well into a mathematical concept, using the same techniques that make physics so rigorous. I assume talking about the details of this won't make a difference to your coworkers, though, who will jump at the sight of an equation that isn't x + 3 = 5 and declare it to be junk.

That was another thing I tried to explain to these fucks. That if they aren't satisfied themselves with the observations of others they can run the tests themfuckingselves. But of course that was just like hitting another wall. How can people be this fucking dense?

Coworkers who do not wish to kill each other and friends who wish to remain friends do not discuss religion or politics.

Ever.

I have plenty of friends I've discussed both them things with. On some topics we agreed, on some we disagreed. Still friends
