I think humans evolved consciousness in large part so we had the ability to put off immediate pleasure for long term goals, any ape can run down a gazelle with a spear but can it plan and think ahead? Maybe there are some emotions involved but we can't feel anxiety about putting off short term pleasure continuously, abstract thoughts are necessary.
