That depends on the setting, if you're in a group of people and you want to show that you're a bad ass while not giving him an excuse to press charges then punching only is justified. If you're jumped when no one is around then biting, kicking, gouging and stabbing is justified to neutralize the threat, at which point you ought to flee like a pussy.
