The fact that air is still getting in and out of the farm would mean that there would still be contaminants in the farm. On top of this, there are two major concerns I would have, the first being that the ants would leave all sorts of waste and enzymes all over the plate, and secondly that they might not eat all of the food on the plate. So no, you cannot create a dishwasher powered by ants because the dishes will still be dirty.

I think, you are right. However, I am still interested in observing the effectiveness of ants at cleaning plates.

I wonder how dangerous the material on the ants would be for consumption. For instance, I know ants leave pheromone trails every where. But I bet those wouldnt be unhealthy.

It would work OK, but they wouldn't get all the residue off and you'd have your plate covered in various ant chemicals and juices.

On a related note though, there are flesh-eating beetles that are used to clean very delicate small mammal skeletons.

Sort of related. My family has a house fairly deep in the mountains, and getting rid of trash is not very easy. Thus we just dump all food remains, and anything that rots, in an ant farm. The little blighters are damn efficient at it.

Yeah really. Its so easy for all us school educated people to never really get in touch with that kind of failure. When you are actually trying to test reality, or make something, predictions might as well be random.

Depends on which species you would like.
But in general, queen ants are larger than their daughters. Mated queens remove their wings. Also, here is a link to a bunch of pictures of queen ants.

Ants wouldn't eat the bacteria that would grow on any food they don't eat, but I bet they'd find everything

Okay Im going to commence a study.

Im going to dirty up some plates from three samples of food (all of which I will eat prior). To try and put down the greatest diversity of nutrients.

1. Buffalo Wings
2. Quesadilla
3. Strawberries and Carrots

I will eat these foods, and then leave them out in an empty lot of commercial real estate by my house where I presume ants live.

I will come back some time later and observe how clean the plates are.
