Most people just don't think they can do it. With Sports, however, they feel more comfortable with because that's more universally 'accepting.'

i.e., I know a really good soccer player at my school. We're really good friends, but once the subject of mathematics comes up, he shies away from the topic. Not because he doesn't find it interesting, but he's automatically intimidated. For fuck's sake, though, I can't talk about soccer 24/7.

Also, science is fucking boring most of the time. When I was a Bio major and doing research, I couldn't fucking stand sitting behind a desk and looking into a microscope. It's why I said 'fuck it' to my Biology major/Pre-Med track and went into Pure Mathematics, which was/is my primary passion. I could never imagine watching people take a fucking exam for 2hrs straight, but I could imagine myself watching a Basketball Finals game for 3hrs straight.
