I am always amazed at this kind of thinking.

120 years ago, we thought there was 7 planets. One-quarter of people would not live past 40 (depending on geography, culture and status, naturally.) Radio was new. Quantum physics, relativity, the secret of how cells reproduced were all to come.

In that time, we have deciphered more about the universe than in all human history before. In 120 years. We have been in our modern anatomical form for 60,000 years.

There are more scientists alive today than the human population for 97% of its history. Every two days we create as much information as we did up to 2003. This rate is accelerating. In 1991 the cost to sequence all your base pairs using current technique would cost $31 billion. In 2009, it costs $31,000, and it's falling at a dramatic rate.

This isn't proof of what I say, but it is suggestive, no? Don't be so pessimistic, my friend. Just fit the curves to the data points.

200 years, stretching credulity? That's not realistic at all.
