I'll bite. Due to the theorized dark matter, space is expanding and this expansion is proportional to distance, so the rate of expansion is actually increasing. The stars, planets, and galaxies that we can see have had enough time so that their light reaches us, so we see them as they were a couple billion years ago. That is also the reason why it isn't bright all the time, not enough star's light have reached us.
