sup /sci/? i have to create a short presentation on the khan academy. what do you guys think of the khan academy? have any of you ever used it? know any good sites or articles that talk about it?

pic related, salman khan creating one of his lectures.

>> No.3278292

Nope never heard of it

>> No.3278301

I'm using it right now to help learn algebra for a placement test. His lectures and the way the practice section is set up has really helped me understand mathematics better than any class I've taken.

yeah his casual teaching style seems to really fit with a lot of people better than a conventional teaching style, and is a lot less boring.

>>3278305
some people prefer to see and hear in addition to read. some people don't learn well by just reading.

I love Sal! So helpful. Really helped me with the intuition >_<
I like the style of the videos - makes me think that he is teaching me personally, ha.
He also did a TED talk. http://www.ted.com/talks/salman_khan_let_s_use_video_to_reinvent_education.html

Watched the video where he tackled evolution a few months ago. I got the impression he was trying not offend anyone.
Yeah maybe it's not correct to suggest that the idea of god isn't completely ridiculous, but he sees the importance of bringing education to everyone and if he offends ignorant religious people and they hide away from knowledge then they may never learn.

He said "I'll not take sides now, interpret it as you will".

And even if he is Muslim, so fucing what? Al-Kharizmi, Abu Ali Ibn-Sina, and Omar Khayyam were Muslims; are you going to shit all over them as well?

I dropped out of highschool in 9th grade due to basically completely wrecking my back.

I learned all of my advanced algebra, trig, linear algebra, and pre-calc from khan academy.

It's just so much better than schools I can't even begin to describe it, I learned so much faster and in such a short amount of time.

His presentations on mathematics are really useful, I don't know about the Calculus I and higher stuff, but its usefulness after taking a year or two off of school for financial reasons is unmeasurable.
I was able to review and actually learn things better than I had in the past, and now I'm stuck in a class taught by a TA and it's immensely helpful as well.

He demonstrates good mathematical habits by remaining calm and not skipping steps, and his videos in addition to other online resources practically eliminate the need for me to spend 200 dollars on a textbook every semester.

Open source education is the future. If you have him liked on facebook there's an NPR story on it that should be extremely useful, they've got 5th graders doing trig and calculus.

>> No.3282592

Brilliant, I've used it for quite some time, in spite of the recent butthurt on /sci/ that he might believe intelligent design, he's done an unimaginable amount for education

his first two linear algebra vids (30 mins total) taught me more than my first 180 minutes of university linear algebra lecture. his videos are free. my tuition (cheap state school) is $3000+. iiiiiiiinteresting. (and ps my linear algebra professor is actually quite good, but khan is just THAT efficient in (many) of his vids).

i think that's the purpose of it. i'm currently taking a statistics course that came with videos based on the textbook. any lecture video regardless of the format or who makes it is ultimately a supplement to something such as a textbook, even if you are quoting the textbook word for word. some people prefer to hear and see rather than read, and it's a good way to reinforce the material.

I don't use his videos, mainly because I don't like the sound of his voice. Also the quality of his videos are good enough to get an idea about a certain subject but not good enough to be a substitute for a class for the harder subject matters.

talk about the intelligent design video in the biology section. Proceed to tell people that because he is deluded, they should watch his videos with caution.

He has a knack for just telling you how to solve something without actually explaining what the equations are describing (in the math section usually).
Not that I need to know what divergence means, but he does a shit job actually explaining it to those that desire that knowledge.

ever wonder why 25x60 works when you do it the way where you randomly add a 0 to the second row? i bet you dont. he explains from addition all the way up to differential equations exactly how and why things work, does proofs on things like the quadratic equation and teaches you how to derive it instead of just giving it to you and telling you to memorize, he actually stresses to never just take something for granted and to always understand why something works. his id vid is just saying that because no one really understands where anything came from then no one can really be sure about it, hes a great teacher and not a religious fanatic or hellbent atheist like all the fucktards on sci are.
