3269411 No.3269411 [Reply] [Original]

Upon opening the front doors, we see solid rock. Same for all exits, suggesting the entire building is deep underground. Mysteriously, fresh air continually comes in via the ventilation system, although it's not big enough for any of us to fit through. Likewise the electricity is fine, meaning refridgeration of food isn't a problem (though it will eventually go bad) and anything requiring electricity can be recharged or run by extension cord.

You're faced with the prospect of having to created a new life here, under these strange circumstances. How will labor be divided? What are our priorities? Build a garden? Construct private residences? Secure weapons and establish a social order?

Let's hear some ideas.

Good thinking. The potting soil in the gardening section wouldn't stay viable forever, but a Costco should have the PVC pipe, aquarium gravel and pumps needed for hydroponics.

In order to get underground, there would need to be a large area cut out. If all the sides are solid rock, then the top is the way out and is probably blocked only by fill. ....Interesting. Costco would have RC cars, home security cameras, and the equipment necessary to power both the car and the camera over a tether. If you ran out you could just build an additional length of tether.

So let's say you do this. After a long period of inching the car up a sloped ventilation duct it finally comes out in a darkened, steel walled room. A loud, constant humming of machinery can be heard. You switch on the flashlight you had the foresight to attach to the camera, then drive up to a metal plate on the wall. Since being idle in this situation is bad, I would come up with a big project that everyone participates in. Like re-sorting all the supplies and tearing down the store shelves for other uses. Cleaning, maintenance. Maybe an exercise and beautification program. Just general, easy, and harmless things to keep everyone busy.

Food would be rationed until a balance is struck between supply and demand. Junk food would be unsustainable so it would probably be used for something else other than consumption. Making alcohol, compost, or whatever else.

The pharmacy would be inventoried and all useful medications would be re-stored elsewhere. Highly addictive substances would be locked away and the key would be hidden.

After that, it's just surviving. I'd volunteer as part of the electronics department. Come up with an intranet for everyone, games, communications, etc. Most of those places have lots of TVs and movies so i'd set up recreational pods around the store.

Obviously most of you likely know more about that then I do as well, but you know theory where as I have many decades of experience with application. I am well aware that with crews of varying experience and physical aptitude, bullshit is going to happen, and a lot of it. Given our finite resources I would try to minimize wasting materials and manpower, assuming that anybody would even listen to me.

I would think that once it was decided that escape was impossible that our first priorities would be waste management, and creating sustainable food sources.

And after about a month had passed, my kidneys would fail completely and I would die.

I do conceal carry at all times so I would have a weapon which I would relinquish to whoever seemed to me to be the most rational and fair-minded person. I would possibly hand it over with the ccondition that one bullet be reserved for my personal use later on when lack of medication becomes a severe issue for me.

>>What happens when they find knives? Or worse, some asshat builds a handful of coil guns?

No homemade coilguns exist that are lethally powerful. And knives are fine, the idea is to make it so that if someone needs to be killed, it takes several people to do it, so there has to have been some kind of consensus about the necessity of it. With guns, anyone can kill anyone else, even many people before they're taken down. That amount of power makes it possible for any nutjob to cause serious harm.

And everyone having guns opens the possibility of tribalism, miniature nation states waging war in a system where everyone must cooperate if anyone is to survive.

>> No.3272264

If the intention is to kill you then the gun isn't usefull because the assailant always has an upper hand.

If the intent is to rob then gun won't be usefull because you will be dead before you can shoot. Again the assailant has an upper hand.

Leadership is an important step in getting shit done, if someone just wants to be leader for the sake of it they'd be caught out pretty quickly by those who want to be leader to get shit done, then after realizing not everyone can be leader those who want to get shit done would choose the best leader in order to get shit done since they do not want to become leader for the sake of it.

Let me start off by saying that I really appreciate this thread, Mad Scientist. It is very reminiscent of something you'd see on /tg/. If you want your scenario to be played out in a more serious or thoughtful manner, I would suggest coming up with some stock of what we have to work with in a costco. Personally, when I imagine a costco, my head is just sort of filled with images of roof-high shelves covered in ambiguous "stuff".
So lets say
there are 50 of us in this costco. For starters, we should gather all non-perishable foods and ration it in calorie based portions and put it aside for when we run out of perishables. It seems like it would be easy to make personal dwellings by clearing areas of the shelves and sectioning them off. We would also have lots of grilling equipment and coal at our disposal for controlled applications of heat.

ctnd: Rather than having centralized leadership, I would suggest separating people based on major or personal skill set. Within these subsets "chiefs" would be selected based on personal merit or level of educations and they would mostly focus on setting up stations to better apply their crafts for the good of the mini-society. Resources could be delegated based on the chiefs meeting and discussing how they wish to apply it, then a vote is held to decide which projects take priority. Chiefs would also need to work in conjunction to figure out ways that certain specialties could be applied to other fields for everyone's benefit.

Otherwise game theory kicks in, and it seems that I will likely be the first one there since I know that is my priority in such a situation.

However, I would agree having properly armed myself to put all the guns into the safes and to have everyone be responsible for one part of the combination. That way no one person can use the guns.

This will work for as long as the pet food holds out. The shit we don't want to eat anyway. After that point, animals that size would become difficult to sustain.

Unless we raise the herbivores like rabbits separately, feeding them bits of the plants we can't eat, and feeding bugs to the mice/rats, then feeding those animals to the larger carnivores.

>Yes, it's possible that the gauge is fake and that all of this is some kind of social experiment. You could rig the RC probe with explosives and try to breech that room. But if you're wrong, water rushes in and you all quickly drown.
Such an amount of water implies that there is an ocean: at this depth, the marinara trench. We could make deep-water submersible vehicles. Likewise, because the ventilation is too small to fit a man, it is easy to block if water comes in. We'd all stil have enough oxygen for a long time, due to the sheer size of the place. By the time oxygen runs out, we would have already figured a way out using the water.

Actually the oxygen problem is no longer even a problem given our sustainable agriculture

From what? What does a Costco contain that could be used to build a full ocean depth submersible?

>>Likewise, because the ventilation is too small to fit a man, it is easy to block if water comes in.

Not at that pressure.

>>We'd all stil have enough oxygen for a long time, due to the sheer size of the place.

You already have an essentially endless supply of fresh air.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

You created this scenario, and we're stupid enough to put /sci/fags into it.

good article on spacemanagement for small area farms.

Also don't most big stores like this have 3-4 birds living in the rafters? we could feed them and have meat source.

Yeah, rape doesn't sound so fun. I'll probably just cut my hair short with gardening shears, stop wearing makeup, and start wearing baggy clothes to hide my curves. Oh, and I'll probably have to hide my boobs somehow… And of course, it'll be hard to hide all of the blood for about 1 week every month…
Either all of that, or I could just kill myself. Not entirely sure which one to choose.

The fuck is wrong with you?
Having to have sex with 10 guys for a survival scenario is really that bad for you?
Shit, is sex really that scary of a thing for women?

The fact that you would consider suicide over just sucking it up and fucking some guys for the sake of the group is ridiculous.
