so everybody knows about this "infinite energy" idea, but why doesn't it really work? i know there needs to be energy to push the balls into the water, but what if you substituted water for like mercury, and then put hydrogen gas in the bubbles. does that make the bubbles try to rise faster? or does it just even out

forces balance out in these kind of things. no energy is produced.

>> No.3257787

1. You need an amount of force to push the balloon into the water at the bottom.

2. The water would just pour out. Seriously, whoever thinks this will work is a dumbass who spent too much time theorizing and too little time actually testing things out.

I speculate that it would just stand still. That's by no means from a scientific point of view. I'm a fking biologist, I don't know shit about this.

The way this thing is constructed, the water would pour out the minute the first floater left the hole.

Still, one thing: buoyancy will be countered by drag after a while.

Bouyancy happens because of hydrostatic pressure. when the ball enters at the bottom, the pressure on the bottom ball is greater in the water than it is in the air, thus it requires work to push the ball into the water from the bottom. This is the same amount of work you'd get out if there was no friction in the fluid and you let the ball go from the bottom of the pool. Thus no net work done.

This is actually right. If the baloons were less dense than the water (assuming they were floating up) means that that whole volume of water can simply reverse the rotation of the whole thing and pour out

Well, you see, the easiest way to realise why this doesn't work is to look at what is actually done when the balls enter the water.
When they do, they need to make room for themselves in that water, they do this by pushing the water away. This water has no way to go but up, where there is also water that needs to be pushed up, and so on so essentially by pushing a ball in, you're spending energy that would bring a ball-sized amount of water all the way to the top.

Buoyancy is provided by the water wanting to go down (more so than the balls). So you'd just be bringing the same ballsized amount of water down again. This is not going to net you more energy, than it costed to bring that same water up.

These thought experiments are sometimes very interesting especially if relativity, expansion of space etc. is involved. Try making one with these.
Say:
Something that makes use of expansion of space - a switchable spring is made up from LC circuits with extremely high L and C. Therefore the oscillation frequency is very low.
Let's assume we start with Charged capacitor:

Step1: E_electric -> E_magnetic LC's are moving further away due to expanding universe (much in the same way as galaxies do). Low magnetic field is building up.

Step2: E_magnetic -> E_electric
Magnetic field induced causes the LC's to get closer to each other due to mutual influence of magnetic fields and electric currents. Thus causing the LC's to move and "gain" kinetic energy that is further on somehow utilised (they collide -> produce heat -> generate more electricity to supply LC circuits). Magnetic field is decreasing.

Why wouldn't this generate energy? (my personal guess is because as the LC's push closer back EMF will "swamp" part of the current in the inductors hence causing loss in current so in fact it will transform part of the magnetic energy into kinetic).

Notation: Electric energy = energy of charged capacitor, "magnetic energy" = energy of energized inductor.

Or make up something like this. And I assure it will make much more intriguing conversation. - If anyone joins the conversation.

>i know there needs to be energy to push the balls into the water

So what's the question, then?

The amount of force needed to push the ball underwater at that depth is equal to the maximum theoretical force of buoyancy for the submerged balls, specifically equal to the weight of a column of water with a height equal to the depth and a cross section equal to the hole you're forcing it through. Changing the depth, number of balls, or density of either balls or fluid doesn't change that at all.

And why should you care about other people's ideas?

If someone expresses their hatred for black people by using the word "nigger", and you ignore it, they'll have achieved nothing. If you get all shitty about it, of course they're going to keep doing shit they see annoys you.

Hell, you even see this with things like online abuse. It usually starts out with a few abusive messages from people, and shit escalates as soon as the targets respond and start telling people to stop.

Getting all annoyed because someone uses a word you don't like (or rather, SHOWING that you're annoyed) is retarded. Just keep your displeasure to yourself.

The amount of energy to push the ball into the water at the bottom is the same amount of energy you get from the ball floating up. To make this more obvious, imagine not individual balls, but a hose that wraps all the way around.
