So /sci/, me and my friend have a dillema and we need some help.

So the two of us (one Atheist and the other Christian) want to establish a student organization at our uni which we plan on calling the Theist Atheist Alliance Organization (TAAO, said like Tao). The ideology of the organization is the riddance of the pointless hatred and bickering between theists and atheists alike, in the sense that we are all still humans and that we can coexist peacefully without hating one another and respecting everyone's beliefs.

We want to know however, do you think we can make it work? What can we do to attract members and what would be some good activities for us to do? Also, what could be some good logo ideas?

pic sorta related, it's how you pronounce TAAO

>> No.3257100

That sounds like a brilliant idea. The symbol could perhaps be a necklace that has beads with all the different religious symbols on it in a circle, with an atheist symbol as one of the beads as well.
Do atheists have a symbol?

All the beliefs should be respected because atheists can not prove that there is no God but theists can not prove that there is one.

It's just, an organisation specifically FOR superstitiousfags and reductionistfags to get together and not fight is silly. They do that all the time in dozens of organisations, it's the whole point of being secular.

Any organisation set up to be both, to include both, should be about argument. Both positions deserve to be argued down, ripped to pieces. If you can't defend your position, if you just hold it because you've never thought about anything else, you're a child. And if people were mature, and honest, this could happen without the need for a framing organisation, but people just aren't.

we can't prove here isn't an invisible 20 foot unicorn either, but that doesnt make the likelyhood of its existence and none existence 50/50, and does NOT mean that these types of rediculous beliefs deserve any kind of respect.

>> No.3257272

>>3257193

The idea is kind of retarded at it's core. The Christian and most religious doctrine say essentially that 'outsiders' either be converted or killed.

And no self-respecting irreligious person could really be ok with the willful ignorance of religion.

Not much else to say, except that this isn't science related....

>> No.3257274

>we can coexist peacefully without hating one another and respecting everyone's beliefs

There are plenty of beliefs (both secular and religious) which do not deserve respect. The concept of the burqa, for example — or any of the hateful misogynist ideas that have historically permeated Abrahamic religions — are terrible notions and should be combated. Likewise with respect to the terribly retributive forms of punishment and law which our culture still clings to (i.e. all the "free-will" based bullshit). And the various communism-related restrictions on religion (yes, I don't like religion, but I don't think it should be legislated against).

If by respect you mean tolerate, I can "respect" really watery deist-style religion which makes very few testable claims... but when the faithful start making concrete claims about the knowable universe (e.g. resurrection bullshit) they cannot and SHOULD NOT expect freedom from critique... and enabling them to go around feeling entitled to freedom from critique is doing them an incredible disservice. It's like keeping a sick kid in a bubble for years after their illness has passed...

So, I dunno. I wouldn't be particularly supportive of the institution myself because I don't give most religious claims any credence. Insofar as choices between relatively innocuous faiths are concerned, I don't respect them anymore than I respect preference of chocolate over vanilla. Furthermore, I thoroughly dislike and fight against any claims (religious or irreligious) where they are poorly evidenced and/or where they prevent genuine societal progress...

I would welcome a place where people could engage in civilized discourse over such topics, as I find cognitive dissonance and myth very interesting, but I would probably end up being more of a thorn in everyone's side than anything else.

@OP unless there's some serious tension at your school over religion, I'd suggest you don't bother. Most people who don't care about others' religious beliefs aren't all that interested in joining teams.
On the other hand, if there are some issues, speak with your headteacher, or staff at the school, rather than trying to organise something student-up. If you do so, you could end up offending them that they weren't consulted, and have enemies even though you don't want to cause trouble.

1) It could have been the imposter with negative EK bias

In a normal thread even some person who has serious problems would not go for such lengths to hide his identity, but on a thread that is about the Harriet = EK it's much more likely to happen.

You imagining that you have a roommate named Harriet seems reasonable. You could have just pulled that whole thing but it might bee too much.

Then the explanation is probably that you are not Harriet.

In all cases you seem to experienced some form of mental breakdown in the last couple of days.

Email the address I posted with what you have. I'm not going to post it here unless you tell me to.

If anything, my unorthodox views upset atheists because I don't conform to their stereotype of what a Christian is.

Probably because I have a reputation of sorts, whereas the rest of them don't.

literally every other club and organization in your school allows both christians and atheists. so this is literally pointless. what are you even going to talk about all day?

"Hi I'm christian"
"Hi I'm atheist."
"Let's get along!"
"OK cool!"
"So... uhh... what now...."
"I don't know..."

>> No.3258187

wow that's so cool op. a club where theists and atheists can get along wow! theres nothing else like it! me and my buddy wanted to join a club together at school but we weren't allowed because he's a muslim and i'm an atheist. the track and field club is theist only, robot club is only atheist. chess club was no atheists allowed. these are all official school rules, and it's the same at every high school in the world. there's just no such thing as a club where atheists and theists are both allowed to join together.

Ugh, enough with this bullshit. The thing that is needed here is not for atheists to forcefully get along with theists. We have lived in a society that constantly tries to sugar-coat reality to the religious for as long as we have been around. The time for that is OVER. It is time to use the internet and academic circles to make the arguments that will begin the end of religion.

We can co-exist and we can get along, but we do not need inter-faith alliances for this. What we need is to utterly destroy the ignorant and misguided belief systems of old. This does not involve hatred or violence, but instead reasoned inquiry and critique. Atheists need to stop being cowards about their viewpoints.

OP here, aside all of the pointless posts about some tripfag, I must say I am dissapointed in most of you.

I was hoping to see others who were not so full of pride that maybe, just maybe there where others on 4chan who where not the EXACT SAME as the religous extremists who hate atheists.

Im done with this thread.

I know how you feel man, and I actually read this thread before and decided not to post (which I now regret).

For me, I usually wake up an atheist, spend my day as a somewhat spiritual person, and just end up being confused as fuck by the time I go to bed. I am never sure of anything, and after a while, it can get frustrating. What I do know is that life is too short to be fighting about everything all the time. I think the real bad guy in this whole thing isn't religious people. I don't think it's atheists. It's the "Us vs. Them" mentality we always have. We need to start looking at everyone as an individual person, even if a certain group has a large amount of douches in it. There are so many damn people that believe in God, and there are so many damn people that believe in nothing, that narrowing them into two separate groups and blaming one or the other for the problems of the world is just ridiculous. We just need to try to find common ground.

I've noticed that when people are kind as hell, I try to find common ground with them regardless of how much my opinion differs from theirs, and vice versa, to the point that whatever we had clashing views on becomes irrelevant.

As for your group, I say go for it. Just make sure you don't lose sight of what you wanted to accomplish in the first place. As for activities, how about everything BESIDES philosophy? It would probably be a blast to realize how much people have in common, aside from what they believe is the meaning of life.

look up "cognitive dissonance" and you'll realize why rational arguments never work. and that people of faith will continue to believe no matter how many times you prove them wrong. at best all your arguments are doing is preventing some fence sitters from falling to the theists.

Heres an idea: Have theists and atheists unite together in reporting, hiding, and saging religion threads on /sci/.

>> No.3258526

if you're a theist just imagine how frustrated you'd be with someone who believes that the lord of the rings is completely 100% factual. imagine pointing out to him that jrr tolkien was just a man who wrote a story. imagine showing him the science proving middle earth never happened. imagine the smug look on his face as he's not even listening, he tells you that you're wrong and going to hell. nothing you say will make him stop believing in middle earth. now imagine that the majority of all the people you've ever met also believe in middle earth.

now you understand how an atheist feels
