Imagine you have no cattle. Now your neighbour steals you X of them. You have to buy 3 new ones so you have none left. What is X?

Well, you know how the frumentarii came last week and you had not enough denarii to pay the taxes, so they took your cattle instead?

Now imagine if they came back today and told you that your payment is still not complete, and you need to find three more heads of cattle in a week, or they'll burn down your house, rape your wife and sell your daughter to some rich patrician as a sex slave?

That's what having -3 cattle feels like.

you get a loan and buy 3 cows, which then die in a horrific multi-charriot pileup on the via back from the cow dealership. your cows weren't insured and you still have to pay the cow dealer for them. you now have -3 cows.
