Maybe when it is a hyper buff dude who isn't athletically gifted. However, there are plenty of very athletically talented people who make the rational decision(for their skills) that pursuing an athletic career is a plausible career choice.

Have you ever went to a meeting of doctors just graduated from medical school? Plenty of them are in VERY good shape.

Not going to the gym is like a weird mark of pride for social outcasts.

Almost everyone who is at harvard played high school sports, and many did well at them.

My brother is at yale, and many of his friends there have very nice 6 packs.

Nerds are those who are only good at academics, but do not have the all around intelligence to succeed at life. News flash, social skills are also intelligence.
