Economics question.

If a high school student, who is on summer vacation, is actively pursuing a job but can't find one, is he considered in the labour force and, subsequently, unemployment?

Arguing with someone about it because a mutual friend is crying that he can't find a job. I say that he normally wouldn't be included but he's included now because of seasonal unemployment. She says he's still not included because he's a "full time student"

If you do not have a job then you are unemployed.

Part of the labor force, but not unemployed.

Unemployed people are people who are looking for work but cannot find a job. So yes, he would be counted, but it isn't like anyone exhaustively counts unemployed people.

Yeah I get that. I was just wondering if she's just fucking retarded, or I am. And for some reason I thought going to 4chan was the smart thing to do.

Not retarded. There are a lot of different ways to count unemployment. It's not reading tea leaves, but that's damning with faint praise.

Un- is the prefix meaning not or opposite employed means to be working for a monetary gain ( in most western societies.)

So if you don't have a job although you're looking for one means you are unemployed.

>> No.3201152

If he's looked for a jobs in the last 4 weeks, he's unemployed. Seasonal unemployment counts as part of the number (U3). Employment numbers are adjusted for the seasonal increase over the summer, but the unemployment rate is not, because both the number of jobs and number of job seekers increases over the summer.
