Politeness, you might think, but actually it's professional courtesy, for the kiddies amongst you, that's how proper well-educated grown ups choose to behave toward each other.

Stress is a psycho-biological occurance.
There's 2 types of stress, Eustress and distress.
Eustress makes you work better because when stress you release amounts of adreneline/ other shit.
This helps you, both pysically and mentally.
However, distress is bad because the brain percevies the stressor as being too high to be delt with using what you've currently got, resource wise. Which is why HUGE amounts of adreneline are released, this causes a period of eustress, followed by a much longer period of distress, in this time, nor-adreneline and other shit is released.
This tries to undo the physical changes that occure due to adreneline being released. If the stressor is still there, then adreneline will still be released. This makes your body increasingly tired/ worn.
Eustress= good= short period/ manageable.
Distress= bad= longer period/ unmanageable.

>> No.3200385

Furthermore, "Good" is a value judgement.
Eustress makes you work better, yes, but it does so with the trade-off of chemical resources, such as dopamine, seritonin, and other neurotransmitters, like GABA.

Well, no, I use the binomial system for tonnes of stuff. Mostly, what i'm workign on is mice and rats and the pathology of Huntingtons and parkinsons. I'm curing disease, but I still need to be aware of the different classifications, mostly for teaching and shit but all the same.

I really wanted to study biology for my next year at school, but the classes were all full :(:(:(

How is the disklike of biology compared to the dislike of other fields of science?

At the highschool and undergraduate level it's mostly rote memorization, which can be a lot of work. If you're particularly good at math/physics and don't have to study much for them, then biology (and chemistry) can have comparatively high workloads (for you).

I've had some good professors though, who painted more broad conceptual pictures. Their tests were more like puzzles: if you didn't have the underlying knowledge of biology, you couldn't recognize the pieces, but if you did, it was actually fun.

So people either find the low level memorization too boring or too hard and are soured on the entire field, which is a shame. Biology covers a wide range of topics, all of which can be quite interesting. The "no maths, not science" argument is bullshit though, but what can you expect from a bunch of high schoolers and first year engineering majors?

It's all because of highschool. People take it in highschool, think that just because their highschool class is based on memorizing useless and stupid things involving biology, means that people who major in biology only memorize shit. So if you are going to blame something, blame the schools for focusing on memorization over actual learning.
