Plants do breathe the same air. They just take different molecules out of air. Specifically carbon dioxide and liberate the oxygen by photosynthesis. Oxygen is a waste product to them. Your friend is also an idiot btw.

plants breathe carbon dioxide and oxygen.Most of the excess oxygen as a by-product of CO2 they release to the atmosphere and tiny fraction of O2 is used up by themselves.
