It's possible. But you're right that this is a more radical change. Adaptations to different gravity levels, radiation backgrounds, and atmospheric temperatures/pressures/compositions is more pertinent. Entirely new metabolic processes might be tricky.

Well, it would be easier to engineer the respiration functions of the lungs away entirely in favor of ingestion and storage of some form of oxygen or some substance suitable for splitting oxygen from water or CO2.

It might be easiest to do this surgically, rather than through genetic engineering.
