Astronomy is a useless field because it is just researching for the sake of researching. It has no practical applications.

I work in high pressure research. The holy grail of this field is to synthesize metallic hydrogen. Astronomers have determined that the core of the solar system's gas giants contain metallic hydrogen. This evidence for the natural existence for the substance makes it substantially easier to convince people we will someday be able to synthesize the substance.

That's how astronomy has helped me. How has it helped you?

It's a University lecture slide. It is what they are teaching students at my Uni.

and don't worry, I don't actually agree with it nor am I doing Psychology. I was just going over my roommates slides out of interest and thought I would be provocative to get a debate going. It looks like this thread is going nowhere.

if all research was based solely on its forseeable usefulness, rather than for its own sake, we wouldnt have Lasers, and theres a lot of tech associated with that.

prehaps even more importantly, we would have no maths to deal with networking and decision-making. Goodbye cell phone and internet

"Why are you researching that when you should be finding a cure for my disease?" Ok, and I don't have a problem with that, but did you know that we diagnosed your disease using an MRI? And what is the physical principle behind the magnetic resonance imager? It came from a physicist, who was an expert in atomic nuclei, wondering how you would detect this in interstellar space! Do you think that physicist, when he came up with this understanding of - it's called nuclear magnetic resonance - do you think that he was saying to himself "One day we'll have machines that will diagnose the condition of the human body without cutting it open in advance."?

You can thank all of your faggy space themed desktops to astronomy.

Also, fucking CCDs. How do they work? And general relativistic corrections to GPS satellites so they fucking work.

Overall, I feel throwing billions of dollars toward research that will hopefully answer the questions mankind has pondered since Day 1 is worth investing in.

Thats the theory. Antimatter is used in PET scans in hospitals, (positron emitting tomography), but those that discovered antimatter would have had no idea of its possibilities. The more we know about the universe, the more we can apply that knowledge to everyday life.

Not to mention some theories take decades to smooth out the creases anyway.

Astronomy has been fundamental in the development of classical mechanics, general relativity, classical and modern thermodynamics, and many other fields. Its chock full of pragmatic, practical applications. Its just that its hard for people with a narrow world-view to see how the perihelion of Mercury (used in the development of general relativity) has had a fundamental impact on how people find their coffee (modern GPS)

PET stands for positron emission topography. The positron is the electron's anti-particle. Sources are literally any technical document pertaining to them; anti-matter is in the name. Its absolutely fundamental to its operation.

People on this board watch too much science fiction.

There's no way in hell we're ever colonizing space. Ever.

We're not gonna even have a town with a population of 100 on the moon. No Mars terraforming, no asteroid mining, no cryogenic sleeping trips to Andromeda.

I can't believe people spend their time on things like this.
