I'm not insecure, just curious:

What is an Alpha-male? Does this term still apply to our society in any way?

Why don't we find human Alpha-females?

What are the characteristics of an Alpha-male?

Is it hereditary?

(Pic more relevant than my questions.)

>Term alpha male is used mostly to explain wolf behavior.

>Alpha female is actually how an alpha male is acknowledge, since wolf packs might have only one female in their group, they will fight for attention of the female. The female chooses a mate and that mate is considered the alpha male.

>Aggressive, but so are most of the other wolves in the pack, just waiting for a chance to remove the alpha male and mate with the female.

It isn't a term that is supposed to be used for humans. We have a completely different behavior than most other animals. We do have different types of aggression, but I'm not quite sure if high aggression yields better fitness in this day and age.

A popular male of high status and power would be considered an alpha male in human society.

thank you for legitimately answering a poorly phrased question.

i assumed an alpha to be an individual with the highest social standing and first priority for breeding.

i ask about applicability and alpha females because i believe our society is moving away from any social construct that found in the animal world (that i am aware of)

typical characteristics may include: taking up more space, unhesitating in where they direct their vision (making eye-contact), and less self-consciousness (perhaps)

hereditary because it may be mostly to do with social standing and wealth

Eye contact is a tricky concept to determine dominance. It relies very heavily on culture. On one hand you have some middle-eastern countries which are known to have "cold stares." When they talk to you they keep eye contact until you look away, they usually don't. On the other hand you hand you have the Japanese culture which prides itself on modesty and passiveness. In this case you would have the Japanese use less eye-contact than they're middle-eastern counterparts.

Does this mean that MidEast consists entirely of a alpha male society, with a beta male society for Japan? I would put my bet on no.

hmm, real ignorance... delicious.

i'm white but happen to have been born in japan, and this has awarded me a unique perspective.

i've read that for some reason a large number of japanese men are loosing their sex drive, i dont know why. in this regard, i guess you could say that they are "beta"-esque.

however, i have been in a few scary situations involving yakuza because of where i lived. these dudes are as alpha as it gets - businessmen more than anything else, they often work alongside the police to do jobs the cops legally can't. show them some general courtesy and manners and you're fine but dont' mess with them.

one time while i was waiting at a cross walk was approached by a drunk japanese nationalist who began talking shit and wanted to start a fight with his friend. i politely told them in japanese to fuck off, but they kept pushing it. i never even saw the guys in suits behind us. without even acknowledging me they took these two guys to the ground. they were on their knees apologizing profusely as i walked away.

don't mistake manners for weakness. that's their style, they simply have different standards. disrespect them and they'll take you into an ally and stab you without hesitation, then pay off the cops (quite common).

i guess these cultural aspects make it difficult to draw any conclusions about alphas globally.

Seriously, America knew that they would've fought to the very last man if they had to, so we pussied out and bombed 'em.

Plus, they kill themselves should they mess up.

If that isn't alpha I don't know what is

Image related is an alpha.

90% of people pegged immediately on 4chan as alpha's are better described as 'transients'. Young males without real confidence or a healthy social network, who engage in vulgar parodies of true alpha behavior by constantly trying to one-up their friends and fuck every woman they see.

That said, women DO like transients, especially when young. And they may indeed grow up and become alpha. But to call them alpha misses the point somewhat.

>> No.3171770

>Why don't we find human Alpha-females?

You do (well to the same extent that you find "alpha males)", women just establish dominance over each other in different ways than men.

I have a perfect example on an real-life alpha male. He's in my class. He's tall, very good looking, almost the best in every sports there is and has a very nice body. He's also one of the smartest guys I know, he always get's A or sometimes B, even in physics and math which are the hardest subjects we have at school. He can sing. He can play instruments. Etc etc.

>> No.3171789

Also, the meaning of alpha and beta has been horribly raped by the internet, especially on 4chan.

It's not a dichotomy. It's a very gradual slope. It only looks like a dichotomy when you comapre two people at opposite ends.
Also, there's such a thing as being an asshole/bitch, being too dominant tends to lead to a decrease in status.

>>3171776

sometimes, but say if they're single?

You're better off not thinking in terms of "rank", it's fuzzier and much more fluid/dynamic than that.

>> No.3171820

Well, obviously in human groups it's more complicated than that.

Women who are single are not part of this system, and could not be described as alpha or beta or whatever.

>what is an alpha male

A construct of pop psychology.

>does it still exist in our society

It never existed outside the movies.

>alpha females

A girl who is more popular or gets more attention from guys is an 'alpha female'. This is the reverse side of the 'alpha male' description which is a male who has the choice of women to be with.

>is it hereditary

No. Everyone has their own talents which may make you 'alpha' in one period but not in another. It depends more on the opportunities one has more than anything else.

Except that, as you say, the alpha/beta thing is not a good fit for human male relationships, and it's even worse for human female relationships.
