I'm looking for a topic I can experiment on over the summer that will impress college admissions officers and give me a topic for my IB extended essay. I'm planning on majoring in biomedical engineering, but the experiment could also involve aviation.

I have access to a workshop and full-scale sailplanes (inb4 crashing them, etc.). Also, sponsoring from local businesses and accessing the local university's stuff are both possibilities, depending on what it is I decide to do.

Can I have some suggestions for things I could look into? I don't know where to start.

from a first glance at the thumbnail i thought it was a swan watching a man very carefully putting his finger into the end of a tiny meat mincer.

how high can these planes go? I'm wondering because you could possibly be able to study the affects of altitude on microorganisms. For example, attach a petri dish to your airplane or something. Just a thought.

Do you have any idea how a plane works?

Planes can go up to hundreds of thousands of feet, but that does not make it useful...

Practically I'm limited by the cloudbase, which is around 7,000 feet AGL on a good day.

Although there are better ways of simulating altitude. Besides, NASA did a bunch of studies and found microorganisms in the upper atmosphere.

I was thinking about making an apparatus of some sort and using it to test a theory. Extremely vague, but that's why I need help. Things like Dean Kamen's inventions appeal to me, but it needs to be practical for me to construct and has to have some kind of scientific yield... maybe some kind of balance experiment on a homemade Segway?

OP, if you were worthy/intelligent/creative enough to get into any top tier university, you wouldn't need our help to come up with your highschool project. You might as well give up cause you've got nothing on the competition.
