>fillers that don't even bond properly
Isn't that the some of the point?

>> No.3078582

>>3078543
The fillers are to replace damaged portions of teeth and prevent access by bacteria to the inner portion of the teeth.

IF they don't bond properly they'll likely come loose eventually or even develop a gap between the filler and the tooth surface which bacteria can then move into.

So in short no.

teeth and bones are primarily made up of apatite, which is calcium phosphate. it is part of the hexagonal crystal system, and is the diagnostic mineral for hardness 5 on the mohs scale.

did more research, tooth enamel contains fluoroapatite, hence the fluoride in toothpaste. this also made me remember that thanks to above ground nuclear testing, carbon 14 radiometric dating can be used on your teeth to determine your age, and can apparently also be used on the lens of your eye.

>> No.3078981

Dentistfag here. Fluoride is good your teeth. It converts hydroxyapatite in your enamel (breaking down at pH 5,5) to more resistant fluoroapatite (breaking down at pH 5,2). Regular fluoridation has been shown to decrease caries incidence by 40%.

And composites or glass ionomer cements bond to the teeth. Amalgams dont, but they have other properties that make up for it (durability, auto-sealant effect, antibacterial, cheap) so they certainly have their place even in modern dentistry. Modern non-gamma-2 amalgams just cannot be compared to old ones your mommy has, in all aspects.

Actually it wears down the enamel overtime. Enamel that isn't replaceable.

we aren't immortal. it only has to last 120 years at an absolute maximum. if biological immortality becomes a reality then we will have to consider things like this more carefully, but as it is, your enamel wearing out just isn't that huge a concern.
