if you ignore it you simply move 8 to left side so you get

x^2 + x - 7 = 0

and then you use formula for solving it, and you get x, approximate values are bit more than 4 and bit more than 6.

ok, I got it. the result is 2. proof?

2^2+2^1+2^0+2^-1+2^-2...= 4+2+1+1/2+1/4... = 8

because 1/ 2 ^(n-1) = 2
