I figured /sci/ would know something about college majors.

I am attempting to create a list of majors divided by type of study. The list must contain as few categories as possible, yet these categories must be able to contain all majors listed.

So far I have:

Architecture
Arts and Humanities
Athletics
Business
Computer Science
Divinity
Education
Engineering
Government
Language
Law
Mathematics
Medical
Philosophy
Science
Social Science

Can I condense this list any further? Am I leaving anything out of the list?

Note: this is not a college major trollfest thread. Please keep it relevant.

I think that architecture is more of engineering, but it is also art. Dunno if you could condense it more that way.

you might be able to combine government and law

Science, Liberal Arts.

well that's pretty obvious but I need to have more than just 2 categories.

>> No.3067209

>>3067198

duly noted
i'll make it be Law and Government

>> No.3067213

Categories:
Theoretical science
Applied science
Art
Trade
History

All majors are one or more of the above. Music performance: art and trade. Mech engineering: applied science.

>>3067213

maybe i'll call it commerce instead of trade

>by type of study

Studying is all the same type of study at undergrad level. Easy.

Personally, I would put them like this:

1. Language, Literature, Linguistics (includes English and foreign languages.)
2. Classics (covers ancient languages and texts. Include PPE in this department)
3. Traditional sciences (Bio, Chem, Physics)
4. Other sciences
5. Engineering
6. Art and design (including architecture, quantity surveying etc)
7. History, Politics, International Relations
8. Maths
9. Vocational courses*
10. Theology and Philosophy.*

* should be taught at specialist and private colleges.

Ok, I've revised my list to this

Art and Design
Athletics
Business
Computer Science
Divinity
Education
Engineering
Government, Law, and Politics
History
Language, Literature, and Linguistics
Mathematics
Medical
Philosophy
Science
Social Science

I really want one more category so that I have 16, a nice square number. What can I add?

So, is economics a social science or business?
