What animates organisms? Is there a dichotomy between organisms that move but simply live (plants, sponges), and organisms which are self aware (humans, pigs, dolphins)?

What is consciousness?

No one knows.

musculature and motor neurons.

>>implying pig are self aware.

To be self aware just means to comprehend that you exist. We put animals in front of mirrors. If the animal realises it is seeing its own reflection the animal must be aware of its own existance.

there is an entire field of study about it. its called cognitive science

i've thought about this myself. what is the most basic impetus behind movement? if you think about a single cell moving or reproducing, what is the catalyst?

Well, not really. As far as I know, they just study the mind as if it was a computer. If you want to understand consciousness, you better study some neurobiology and philosophy of mind.

Consciousness is a state of being, it is being aware of oneself and the things around you as-well as being able to formulate thought. IMO.

consciousness is the soul. while Déjà vu is memory stored in your DNA.

Also your picture of newton.

How can consciousness form from material organic compounds? Like carbon, nitrogen, sodium, calcium, oxygen, hydrogen, and all the elements which comprise our brain...How can atoms arrange in a manner so as to know itself!

>> No.3058262

basically the idea is that when an organism becomes sufficiently complex, its mental life becomes rich enough to exhibit certain properties, such as abstract thought. all organisms have sensors, like eyes, ears, tactile sensors, etc. at a certain point, the organisms gain "sensors" of their sensors; they are capable of governing/analyzing their sensors. for example, if i put a picture of a tiger behind you while you are looking in a mirror, you dont get scared. why? because you are able to generalize about your environment and can discern the input from your eyes. the aggregate of these sensors of sensors, sufficient computing speed, and several other factors, are what we call consciousness.

>Is there a dichotomy between organisms that move but simply live (plants, sponges), and organisms which are self aware

There's a distinction but not a dichotomy, as there are different levels of what is termed "self-awareness." The most basic form amounts to simply understanding that one has a body.

While the determination can become difficult in individual cases the alternative you present is simply absurd.

cognitive science is concerned with computers, yes, but thats because it is theorized that computers can become conscious. cog sci is the intersection of philosophy of mind, linguistics, psychology, computer science, epistemology, logic, and certain types of math (probability theory, game theory, graph theory)

Couldn't something be complex without being intelligent?

Are human beings the most complex organizations of matter in the known universe?

Do people that hold this 'idea' believe that things which exist that are more complex than us, but don't exhibit outward signs of intelligence/awareness, are as aware as us?

what is funny is some of them have the ability to be self aware, but arent because of the environment they are raised,

I think what this person is talking about consciousness, varies with the type of animal, there is a distinct difference like plants/animals, can't think of a plant that has a consciousness (similar in the way we do) but animals is a grey area, e.g. difference between insects and fish, centuries ago all animals were seen in a similar light to how we view ants, machines

if the numbers don't denote intelligence why do we need "them" & use "them?" because we just simply must? I mean I'm sure you've been more than overjoyed on 1 of your birthdays if not most all. You celebrate a number each & every year multiple times with multiple people. Yet numbers lack intelligence even if they can be complex? Is your life gray to? Are you depressed a lot lol?

Algorithms = Complex Numbers doing simple to complex things. Look at Watson on Jeopardy, Numbers in a machine being highly intelligent.
