So. I guess there's a chance that we may have witnessed an alien probe in 1991.

http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?1995Obs...115...78S&data_type=
PDF_HIGH&whole_paper=YES&type=PRINTER&filetype=.pdf

It'll make another pass in 2017. My first instinct was that it's probably just a spent rocket booster from the apollo program, but apparently the orbit discounts any launch later than 1970, and all of the launches prior to that date powerful enough to place a payload in this objects orbit have been accounted for.

Thoughts, /sci/?

Well, the habitable zone is essentially just the area around a star where water is liquid.

For our solar system, the habitable zone of our star actually stretches from Venus to Mars - both of which are within the habitable zone, but are not habitable.

However, this things orbit almost precisely matches Earth's. This kind of orbit *has* to be artificial. There's no way an asteroid would go into an orbit like that by itself. This is the kind of orbit that satellites and probes go into.

Isn't strange how this object has almost exactly the same orbit as Earth, but is just a significant distance 'ahead' of us.

Almost like it didn't want us to see it, and if it were even slightly further ahead of our orbit, which appears to follow almost exactly, it would always be "around the bend" and out of sight?

Very cool find indeed especially after lookin at the referenced post's simulation from JPL.

My mind is pretty fucked from seeing how it conveniently follows our orbit exactly, but way in front of us.

If it was a transmission probe for this purpose near Earth it would imply that "they" are really our ancestors, and not a foreign alien species. Instead, us from the past who somehow seeded a genetic variance to Earth in the hopes of propogating the species despite the supernova.

Some other foreign alien species isn't going to put out a homing beacon to their origin to a primordial soup planet

Thus everyone's tears, it would imply that even when we found an "alien" probe, it would still just be us and we would still be foreveralone.jpeg in the universe.

It's in an orbit that asteroids under normal conditions, cannot get to.

It is rotating, but the object does not have a uniform albedo, parts of it are reflecting differently than other parts, which suggests it is not an asteroid made of a single type of material.

The logical conclusion is that it is a man-made object that has been placed in this orbit, either purposely or accidentally. However when you look through the records, everything is accounted for, there is no man-made object that has been placed into an orbit of this type, and keep in mind this thing was spotted in 1991, not any time recently.

So the evidence suggests that it is artificial and was not made by humans.

By the way, it has a close pass with Earth every 26 years. The next pass is in 2017, and then 2043 after that.

The object is ~10m in diameter.

That's a bit larger than the apollo command module, and it's outside of Earth's gravity well. I'm not even sure if the Saturn V could put something of that size beyond lunar orbit.

The odds of 'hiding' something that big in a launch though? Nil. You need to dedicate an entire launcher just to lifting something this big into that kind of orbit, it's not something you just kind of hide away in a small compartment at the back of the rocket.
